had my beautiful baby girl 2 days ago, but she had to be sent to a different hospital right away due to some breathing issues, so I have been pumping. Only thing is that there is a lot of blood in my colostrum. Anyone experience this? I find it quite unsettling.

Didn't want to r&r not sure about this. I know that I won't hurt baby but not sure what could be causing it. Are you experiencing any pain? Hope your little girl is alright and her breathing gets better :hugs:

Could it be your nipples bleeding? I hope your little girl is doing better!

no my nipples are fine and I'm not having any pain. The nurses here at the hospital said to give it a week and see if it goes away. I just find it disturbing!

I had blood in my milk when I was pumping, but that was due to cracked nipples.

Sort of off topic, but I grew up on a farm, and when cows would get milked for the first couple times they often had blood in their colostrum with no ill effect on either mother or baby. Not to compare you to a cow, but it does seem like something that can happen without cause for alarm..espcially if nurses don't seem worried and you're not in pain.

Didn't want to RandR. I think it's be a bit shocked by it to but as long as the nurses aren't worried I'm sure it's okay. Maybe something to do with hormones!?

I was reading somewhere that while unusual this is quite normal; also colostrum can even be purple so I am presuming that involves blood being in there somewhere I believe it is due to increased blood flow to the breast. Just been reading on it though and it could be due to the pumping causing bleeding inside the nipple/breast, which cannot be seen. Try changing the pump settings but otherwise its not something you need to worry about or do anything about xx

I had exactly the same as you when my LO was born (he was prem so in scbu and I had to pump).

My midwives called it rusty pipe syndrome (!) and said it was nothing to worry about. It cleared up after a few days' pumping.

When my baby was born I used to squeeze my nipple to see if the colostrum was changing into milk. I noticed a little blood came out whenever I did. I was grossed out but was told to continue feeding from that breast. He was okay & didnt seem to mind.
