I have an appointment on Monday with the diabetic clinic at our hospital for a diabetic diet meal plan, and I am now to check my blood sugars 7 times a day. We go from there with the insulin. Anyone want to be "diabetic buddies" with me?

how come they are jumping right to insulin hun. i have gestational diabetes too and take my sugars 6 times day. i have just been givien from the diabetic clinic a tablet called metformin which seems to be controlling my sugars for now but i am only 21 weeks pregnant.

No, sorry no insulin, I meant, after they check my sugars...we go from there...just because this is my third baby...and I had insulin-dependent diabetes with all of them. Since I am older, there is a very good chance I will have it again.

is it hard to do i might have to have it too and its scary as heck lol

I know, I hate needles...even though the finger pricks hurt more. I just phoned back the diabetic nurse...and she was a real snot. Great...sounds like my appointment should be fun.

when i first went to our clinic i saw 5 different people it was a ball ache so long and boring.
i have to go every two weeks now to see them. it took me ages to be able to prick my own finger the thought of injecting insulin scares me wit less.

For me, the insulin was easier. They wanted me to do it in my stomach...no thank you...so I did it in my thigh...and I rarely felt it. The finger pricks hurt more for me, but the insulin creeped me out, because I was injecting something into me...and that was icky. I am really hoping that I don't need the insulin this time round.

Sorry yo hijack but I am suspected to have GD after MW found glucose in my urine last week. She is going to test me again next week and if its still the case then I will be sent for glucose test at the hospital.

My concern is that it will take me up to sat 35 weeks before I even get diagnosed. Will this be enough time to control my blood sugars through diet? or will they just go straight to needing to induce me early without trying to even control it over 2-3 weeks?

I am not sure Mrs. Steer. I think it honestly depends on the way it happens where you are. I don't think they induce here...but, I was having a scheduled section for other reasons...so maybe that is why...plus I went early anyways. One thing tho, is your baby may be born hypoglycemic (low blood sugar). The reason for this, is the baby gets the sugar from your blood but makes his own insulin. So, before he is born, if you have high blood sugar, he will too...then as soon as he is born...the blood sugar drops because he will be making insulin for that high blood sugar...does that makes sense? lol The cure is simple...both my children received a bottle of formula at birth. Ask if your OH or you can give it. It didn't have any effect on breastfeeding as it was only one bottle. Just exercise after you eat, eat complex carbs, no juice and try to eat some protein with each meal (it helps balance your blood sugar). Let us know how you get on. :hugs:

I have GD, insulin dependant since 11 weeks. It sucks to have but rather easy to manage but I only check my sugars 4-5 times a day? Weird.

I noticed with my last baby, that alot of things are different in the states versus Canada with regards to diabetes. For example...a high blood sugar reading here is over 7. I think yours is way different. Also, the insulin and checking it...I just remember I had a friend from the states, and we compared. That was a long time ago now...it's hard for me to remember! lol
