Could someone please explain breakthrough bleeding to me? What it is like? When it starts?

I'm currently 4+3 and last night before going to bed I noticed some light pink spotting when I wiped. I popped a pad on overnight to see how bad it was (fully expecting the worse this morning waking up) but there was only a couple of little drops. It's now turned reddish brown but it's no more than spotting and I have no pain or cramps.

I'm so worried because this is how my ectopic pregnancy in April started out albeit it took until 6 weeks before I got any bleeding and there were mild cramps with that. I have an appointment with the EPU on the 22nd at 6 weeks to rule out ectopic but I'm not sure I'm even going to make it that long. I'm calling them today to see what they say.

I know bleeding in early pregnancy can be quite normal but I can't seem to muster up the courage to hope that this is all it is.

LynAnne, first *big hugs*

Any bleeding is SO scary, I know. :( And no matter what people say that it's normal, it's REALLY hard to believe especially if you've had losses before!

For me I swore on my life I never get implantation bleeding or even spotting. I never ever have with any of my successful pregnancies, it was a total unicorn as far as I was concerned. Usually any spotting means the witch is on her way no matter how I got my hopes up.

This time, go figure. Not only did I get spotting, I got a burst of bright red bleeding which was enough to look like the light bleeding at the beginning of AF. Except, it stopped within hours and went to brown and then nothing within a day. The timing was right around when I usually expect AF, so approx 12-13dpo. I was actually mad at my stupid body for being weird on Femara and despairing my body was totally trolling me. On my RE's request I did poas that weekend, and go figure - bfp. My spotting/bleed would have been just about 4w pretty much.

Well it's still very early days, but I had my betas tracked and had an early scan yesterday, and while it's still too early to even confirm viability they have ruled out molars, ectopic, and BO (which I was sooooo terrified of). My betas in particular were pretty high and doubled fast which was really reassuring in the early days.

So I would say, never say never! Implantation bleeding can be anywhere from 7dpo onwards, and can be a spot or bleeding, and breakthrough bleeding happens right when you'd expect AF (so like you and me). I ended up getting brown gunky spotting for a few days after the bleed which cleared up fast and fx it's been fine ever since.

*hugs* Hang in there. Are you having your betas tracked? You can ask for that and it should reassure you if they go up normally. Afaik ectopics tend to have slow rising, abnormally low, or betas that go up and decline and go up again. It's so tough to not think the worst, I know. :( I still will fear the worst until I can at least hear the heartbeat.

I had very light spotting at 17 weeks with my daughter (who's now almost 2 years old) and at 9 weeks with this pregnancy (which is now 37 weeks along and going well).

Ironically, I had absolutely no bleeding with my miscarriage (which was a missed miscarriage diagnosed by ultrasound at 9 weeks).

Bleeding/spotting can be a bad sign or it can mean nothing at all. I know how terrifying it can be after you've had a loss, so I really hope it turns out to be nothing!! Good luck!!!!
