hi ya ive just come home yesterday with my baby , today after 10 mins of breast feeding my boob was leaking blood as it had leaked over half of charlies scratch mitten so i stopped straight away and phoned the midwife and she said to just check to see if its still doing it later has anyone else had this problem as im a bit worried i wont be able to use that breast

I had that problem on my left boob before my milk came in.
Mia was just sucking way to hard and the nipple started bleeding.
The reason why it happens is that before your milk comes in there is only a little bit of colostrum in and the baby (who has really never done it before) is just sucking way to much to try to squeeze it out and capillaries in your nipple break and bleed.

That's what I really hated about BF. I know it is all about bonding and everything, but before the milk comes in it is nothing but pain for the mom and frustration for the baby.

I put lansinoh lanolin cream on my nipple, it turned into a scab and it was better in 2-3 days.

i think my milk should have come in by now as he was born on thursday

when you tried your left boob again did it bleed again

It never bled again, but I gave it a rest from BF and just pumped milk out for her.

how long did u give it a rest for, sorry to keep asking questions lol  xxx

I think 3-4 days after I came home, so 5-6 days after she was born.
as soon as you see that your nipple has healed then give it another try.

oh no my other one is bleeding too and there both bleeding now i dont know what to do, when u say u gave it rest do u mean u bottle fed or just used the 1 breast ? xxx

It's ok to keep feeding from the breast if it's bleeding, as long as the pain isn't too much for you. The blood won't do him any harm - Lansinoh is great for healing them quickly, and you don't need to wash it off before you feed. Both of mine bled a bit at first but the pain got better really quickly once the lanolin stopped them sticking to the breast pads!

It's not a good idea to stop feeding on one side because it won't be stimulated to produce more milk, but if it's too painful to feed you could try pumping until it heals a bit?

I did the same as Aqua when I bled out of my right nipple during the first 3-5 days of breastfeeding. My nipple was healed by day 7.

If you have a pump, I suggest you just pump out the milk since it is more gentle than the baby sucking. Pumping didn't hurt me at all, but Mia's sucking really did.

thanks everyone, its stopped bleeding i had to give him 1 bottle last night though and give them a rest theyv been ok till this evening and are now i think too sore to feed him so il have to give him bottles again i think :hissy: there stinging so much, i thought u couldnt use a breast pump for 4 weeks ? xxx

I have been expressing my milk ninto tommee tippee closer to nature bottles and giving them to Hannah for about a week now and she hasn't had any problems going between breast and bottle. My right breast is too sore to put her on it just now so have been alternatng between left one and bottle where I would have put her on my right one

Everyone has given great advice, I just want to second the suggestions about the lansinoh lanolin cream!! It works wonders to help keep your nipples from feeling horrible those first few weeks.
