hello girls :hi:

im new here, but will so be needing support...i am struggling with bf alot he wouldn't feed at all at first so i hand expressed colostrum and syringe fed whilst in hospital
and now i am stuggling to get him to latch well, so i am in agony and we end up spending ages fighting to get him to feed.
thinking of exclusively expressing and bottle feedign as i just expressed 1oz in seconds and it was so easy.

anyway here he is my first bf photo

Aww hun, it's so hard isn't it? Do you have a BF clinic you could go to? It could be for a fixable reason that he's not latching on like perhaps he's tongue tied.

My sister is a BF support worker so I am happy to ask her for advice otherwise.

I had problems at first with my LO and she suggested something called the sandwich technique. Basically it's manipulating your boob so that it is the shape of a sandwich ie long and flat. Alternatively try pressing down by your nipple so that it points to the top of his mouth.

Your nipples shouldn't hurt if he's on correctly but in the meantime have you tried lanolin or vaseline?

Feel free to pm me. xx

thanks hun, i haven't managed to find out if there is much support locally, i for some reason presumed i would just have a natrual delivery and have no problems with breastfeeding! i was so wrong. so i never found out beforehand and so far its been so hectic and a bit of a daze, however i see the midwife tomorrow, so can ask then.

i have just been using boots nipple cream so far, i'm not sure if its doing much good really but i'm keeping at it, i cant use the lanolin because im vegan. haven't heard of using vaseline so could try that i guess :)

i just worry hes not feeding enough hes gone from 6lbs4 to 5lbs13. he usualy only feeds for 10 mins at a time every couple of hours, i did ask the midwife if it was ok, she said its probably fine as my milk is pouring out and hes gulping during feeds. but she wasn;t very reassuring!

xx

as long as the weight loss is less than 10% you'll be fine, my milk came in late due to difficult birth and charlie went from 8lbs 9,5 to 7lbs 11, at last weigh in he was 11lbs 9 at 6 weeks! Sounds like you're doing a fab job to me x

Never forget to call La Leche League if you are having trouble! They've always been good to me too xoxoxo

My lo also feeds for 10 mins every 2 hours and he's gaining weight just fine. It's quite normal for them to loose a bit of weight before regaining it again.

Hope the midwife will give you some info on local BF clinics. My labour was also not to plan and I struggled with BF at first. In fact I have just spoken to a midwife at the hospital to arrange a de-briefing so I can find out exactly what happened and where it went wrong.

x

Olivia at about 6 weeks - We are having a few latching issues but I just spend a little extra time taking her off and relatching her which is slowly becoming less and less. I absolutely love this thread.

How do I get one of those breastfeeding milestone stickers ?? Thanks in advance. x

Hun, I had the same fight for about an hour to an hour and a half with my DD at first - we have now reached the 7 month milestone - the key is to relax Hun, I know it sounds really hard, but trust me, your baby picks up on stress. I am currently training as a BF counsellor, so can help you in any way you want. I can PM you my mobile number if you want support, but if you just get the positioning and make sure you are comfortable to feed right, you will get there. Have you tried lying down to feed, or expressing a bit of milk first, then latching baby on? Let me know if you want help Hun. Always here Hun xxxx
Just want to add Hun, that your baby comes with a 'packed lunch' that gets them through the first 24 hours anyway. They have a stomach the size of a marble when they are born, so just need 5ml colostrum to feed the first time, so don't stress out too much - you have time to make it work xxxxx

Beautiful pics, Veganmum2be and Laura, it's so lovely to see pics of our little ones having their dinner! I need to take some new ones of Sam!

Vegan, hope you manage to continue with your feeding, it's so hard to get it right but so rewarding when it works. I know the old thing is that things improve after 6 weeks, but I think that's so true. I think things have changed loads for us in the last couple of weeks, my supply has settled down and I'm not sore or anything. I enjoy feeding Sam! :baby:

ladys your pics are absolutly gorgeous !! I know its a long way off but i cant wait to share mine xxx

thankyou for all the help and advice its much appreciated.
i caved yesterday and gave 1 bottle of EBM as my nipples just couldn't take it, but i've chilled out a bit sinse then and i am seeing the midwife today going to find out what help is on offer locally.

:)
xx

My BF photo(bad quality due to phone) which was taken a few days ago. Been thinking about putting one on here for a while but I've been too shy. Still, have managed to pluck up the courage. :)
