Breech Baby

Hi Ladies!

Hope you are all well - as my title says my baby is Breech and my midwife has started talking to me about c - sections. To be honest I am fine with that, I believe what will be will be and as long as I get my boy here safe and sound I dont care how he gets here!!

Any way I was wondering if any of you know at what week I would be booked in for a section if thats how things end up?

I am still working full time and need to start thinking about when to take my mat leave as I am currently booked in to work right up until my due date. I am in the UK by the way!!

I'm in Canada, mine was booked at 36 weeks but my baby ended up flipping the week before, but by then I had my heart set for a c-section so I still had one. It was lovely, and now I have an excuse to have more!
You might want to as your midwife about "natural c-sections", where you get skin to skin right away, they're great.

I have been looking up about a natural c sec as I think this is def the way id like it to be. Calm and relaxing!!

To be honest ive got my head around it now, and I really dont think he is going to flip - however in the UK if he does flip last min I dont think I will still be able to go ahead with C Sec which is a bit of a shame as Im a bit of a planner and dont like things changing last minute!!

I think in the UK they also allow elective c-sections but they're just not as widely advertised (I heard from my OB)

Yes your right they have been written into the guidelines that we can chose, however many docs make it really hard to go ahead with and some can even refuse as they are just guidelines as apposed to rules. This is just so ive heard though!

If you dont mind me asking, how was your recovery? Only thing im worried about is not being well enough to look after my baby and from a vain persepective not getting a scar overhang!!! lol

My recovery was great. The worst day is the first day, but every day got better exponentially. I think I had 3 shots of morphine total and after that just on Tylenol... And contrary to popular belief, my c-section actually really encouraged me to breasfeed because I couldn't get up, so I had a great excuse to neglect the rest of the world and stay in bed with my baby for two weeks. I just did diaper changes in bed, breasfed and watched tv, it was great.
As for the "vain" question, I don't think the overhang is a result of the c-section, I think it's just from being fat lol (at least that's what I think mine is). I've seen other ladies recover quite well from them and have awesome tummies but that wasn't my experience. They don't cut your stomach muscles anymore, the only "muscle" they cut is the uterus. I wasn't looking forward to a scar but I actually became quite attached to it, now it's like my souvenir. I look back and have such great memories of it (seriously!)

Thank you for your honest replies, you always hear so many horror stories of awful scars, insides falling out, pain and not being able to do anything, it really does scare first time mums like me! Also the plus side is at least I get to meet my boy earlier (hopefully). Thank you once again! x

I heard all of the horror stories before my C-Section, and it made me so nervous! It was not as bad as they say. Don't get me wrong... it is abdominal surgery, and it sucks. But it is not as bad as people lead you to believe. I had a scheduled C-Section due to my little man being Breech. They scheduled it for 39 weeks. However, I went into labor at 36.5 weeks and after 5 hours of labor waiting for my c-Section, he decided to stick a foot out of me! He was not willing to wait for the section! So, a scheduled C-Section turned into an emergency section and I had to have full anesthesia instead of a block. Unfortunately this means that you cannot hold your LO right away, in fact, I didn't get to see or hold him until 6 hours after the surgery.
Recovery wasn't too bad. Every day it gets much better. My incision opened a little and we have to pack the hole with gauze twice daily, but even with that, I don't consider it to have been a horrible experience. One of the more difficult things is that you don't realize how much you use your abdominals... until you can't use them!
The weight came off delayed for me, I left the hospital weighing the same as when I went in with a baby in me! But randomly 7 days after the surgery, i was down 10 lbs, then a week later, down 20. The edema from the procedure is what causes it.
Don't sweat it, it is not that bad!

Wow how comes you've got your date so early? They said to me that with breech babies they don't even book in till 36 weeks - your so lucky to have a firm date, I hate all the uncertainty!!!! You must be soooo excited xx

The consultant said he is unlikely to turn he's partially stuck and measuring ahead I also had a 3rd degree tear with my first so they just decided to get it all arranged now. I am sooo excited but really hoping he wont try to come earlier than 39 weeks xx

Are you in the UK? I thought that they usually book you in about 38 weeks to avoid any early labours! Oooo I'm excited for you - only a few more weeks and you get to meet your bubs! Xx

Yh I am in Surrey, I was told the norm is 39weeks but my info sheet says if waters break or I get contractions I should go in straight away. Hoping I wont because then I will have to get an emergency section instead

It seems so real now.. xx

mine was breech scheduled for 39 weeks i think thats the norm in the UK

My OB (in Canada) said he'd do it up to 10 days prior to 40. Mine was done at 39 3

My LO was breech as well. Planned sections are usually booked between 38 and 39 weeks. The hospital I was at there was some element of choice on the date (within the week they want to do it). So they offered us a date and asked if that was ok, so we could have chosen a different one that week if we wanted to and it was available.

Have they offered you an ECV? It's not pleasant and not often successful, but worth a try to avoid a section. I have to admit, I hated my section and would have done anything to avoid it. We did discuss a breech vaginal delivery, but LO was estimated to be big, so they advised against it. IN the event, he was average sized, so I was gutted that the growth scan was so wrong.

For me, it was 6 weeks before I felt anywhere near back to normal and in my books the long recovery time, pain and limitations it placed on me were the last thing I needed with a new baby to look after as well. I was really hoping he'd turn at the last minute, but of course he didn't. Sorry if this is a bit of a downer, but I suppose different people have different experiences of sections.

Hi it's normally around 39weeks. i had my son via elective section 12weeks ago. my consultant only did electives once a week or it was either at 38+6 or 39+6 and it would have been too risky to have booked it the day before i was due. so i had my section at 38+6

This is what's happening with me... I'm seeing the MW on tuesday to talk about a date because the LO keeps going frank breech and every so often turns oblique so it's likely she won't turn at all according to the MW.


Ordinarily she said 39 weeks but she has said as I'm slightly measuring ahead it's looking likely to be a little bit earlier.


I'm so nervous! But I'm excited too!
