Baby Jack was born Saturday 2:14am weighing 3.84kg (8lb 8) at 38wks 3 days. (My DD was born 39wks 3days for those that wanted to know if my 2nd came earlier - clearly yes
)
My story....was getting contractions (I classify as period type cramps) on Friday from about 6pm. They weren't overly uncomfortable, but enough to get me wondering. They seemed to be getting a little more regular by about 8pm, so I thought I'd start timing. They were mostly between 3-5mins, but they weren't overly strong and there were a couple between 5-10mins. I went to the loo and and had a normal BM (no diarrhea) and of course had a wee as well and when I wiped at the front there was blood. When I had my show with my DD, there was heaps of mucus with the blood. This time there was no mucus. I had a feeling that perhaps this might actually happen tonight
. Because there was fresh blood, I thought I best give the hospital a buzz just to make sure everything was ok. They thought it was probably fine, but to come up and get checked out to be on the safe side. She was thinking along the same lines as me... That I would be able to come home again before things really got fun. We did a bit of a quick pack of last minute stuff to take just in case and jumped in the car (after a shower- my lady garden was not going to be seen in THAT state! Lol) the drive to the hospital is about 20-25mins. I realised in the car that the contractions had become more regular and more painful (not too bad, but having to concentrate to pretend they were ok because DD was in the car).
Got to hospital and bubs and I were monitored and all fine. They thought the bleeding was just my show. The midwife took one look at me and said I wouldn't be going home though as I was in labour. (Had DD picked up by her grandad).
They did a cervical check... Completely closed and high
she could feel bubs head but he was up really high. She called my OB and they decided to leave me for a bit to see if the contractions did anything.
Well, fast forward a couple of hours and the contractions certainly increased in frequency and in pain. They gave me pethadine (which basically relaxed me a little between contractions but didnt change the pain). OB came in and examined. Gave me G&A whilst that happened, and for the contractions. Far out that exam hurt! Apparently bubs was still up really high. Contractions were so strong but I just wasnt getting anywhere. They decided because bubs was high and large (I'm only about 5ft 2) and due to having a previous EMCS, that it was best to have a c-sect. Well they procrastinated and dawdled (well it was the early hours of the morning I guess, and they had to get theatre staff etc - felt like forever though) my contractions became so painful. It took forever! I just soo wanted an epidural. I was sucking on that gas! (I felt like my voice sounded like a man as I tried to breath through them).
Then my waters broke and it was panic stations. I was a bit out of it at this stage due to the pain and gas. Meconium everywhere. Bubs HB dropping by half. People on the phone saying 'get him here now!' (Referring to my OB) Hubby hell quiet (which I knew meant he was bloody pissed off or worried - turned out to be both at this point. Pissed off that it was taking so long and seeing me in pain - i didnt have G&A with me as I was waiting in theatre - and what appeared to be no one doing anything - and him being hell worried about bubs and if we was going to make it). I'd only dilated to 3cms.
Back to my waters. OMG, there was sooooo much fluid! Everytime I had a contraction, more fluid would come out. I started to wonder if I was weeing myself everytime. But no, it was my waters that were horrible with meconium.
So, back to theatre. Finally got the Epi in (after a general first and a couple of attempts for the Epi) and cut me open. There seemed to be a lot more tugging and pressure this time around. They lifted up my son to show me. All I could really see was the umbilical cord and the general shape. All I cared about was whether he was crying. It seemed to take an eternity to hear that little cry. Apparently the meconium had been there for some time as his skin was stained with it. He was born at 2:14am - so around 8hours after contractions started.
Sorry it's so long. My beautiful baby boy is just perfect. Welcome to the world baby Jack. Mummy and Daddy and big Sis (5yo) love you so much already. It was painful and stressful and all totally worth it. Can't believe how instantly we all fell in love.
