Hi

So dh has decided Buzz is his fave boys name. We also have Danny and Tommy on the list. Our surname is single syllable and has an "s" sound in it, which I think is a bit of a mouthful with Buzz but dh doesn't see it!
I'm also not sure about 2 single syllable names? He won't have a middle name.
Honest opinions please!

I can only thing of buzz lightyear from toy story...I don't know if you would want to call your child like him. wouldn't be my first choice.
Also, personally, with a single syllable surname I'd take a first name with several syllables, so that it doesn't sound so harsh.

I'm not really able to appreciate Buzz as a proper given name. It reminds me mostly of the sound of something buzzing or the bully brother in Home Alone. And then there's Buzz Lightyear.

It's a cute nickname, or even middle name though. I hate to not have much positive to say about a name but I'm having trouble seeing it from a different perspective than where I'm at right now trying to see Buzz as a name for the first time.

Thanks. I've got reservations about it too!! I really like Quinn but dh doesn't!!
Xx

I think paired with your daughter being Lily, which is super popular, it'd be a little much to have a name like Buzz for a sibling.
Quinn is nice! I don't see anything wrong with two one-syllable names

The first thing that popped into my head was "to infinity.. and beyond!" Sorry 😓

Reminded me of buzz from home alone too not a favourite of mine I'm afraid x

I just can't see it as a real name I didn't even know it was ? Buzz light year comes straight to mind. Also because your DD has a popular respectable name and then to have buzz doesn't make sense to me . it's your choice in the end though

First thing that comes to mind is Buzz Lightyear. Once I'm past that it just kind of makes me picture a dumb jock. Sorry. I also think it's going to be a difficult name to have as an adult... as someone who used to go through mountains of resumes as part of a hiring process, I would honestly be a bit turned off by someone named Buzz. I know that probably sounds awful, but realistically in a high profile job/business setting, if you're looking at two resumes with the same qualifications... you're going to hire a David over a Buzz every time.

I think it's fine as a nickname but I'd definitely be looking for something more formal.

I actually know a Buzz who is two, I think it works Au the moment but I'm not sure how it will age.

Yeah, it's not a great name. Perhaps you could use another name that begins with B and use Buzz as a nickname?

Wow, thanks everyone. Guess that's a no then?!? :winkwink:

There's only one to decide that and that's you.:flower:
but personally I'd think about either using it only as a nickname or second name.
Just think about if the firstname of you kid still sounds awesome when you imagine it as the name the President of the United States.
If it sounds like you couldn't take a president with such a name serious, then it's not the right name, in my opinion. :)

I've found Busby and Buster as names that can be shortened to Buzz if that's of any help.
Honestly at end of the day it's your baby and only your opinion that matters so if you both like it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks x

A Buzz was the second man on the moon...

that's not a president. Also...it was a nickname, his name was Edwin Eugene if I remember right.
I could think of a "Chayenne Ashley Tiffany" (typical "youneek" name in Germany) as a scientist (even though even that is slightly difficult), but i couldn't think of her as Kanzler or Bundespräsident or another highranking political figure.
I don't say that Buzz generally is such a name, because as non-American
I'm not inside the culture so much that I can decide that, but generallyand regardless of which name we talk about, with the "president"-rule you can filter out the names that could make life more difficult for the child when it is an adult.

Just makes me think of Tom McFly and his wife who have a 1 year old called Buzz Michaelangelo Fletcher - seemed silly to me when they used it, although I do follow them on Instagram and the boy is cute! He's just a major Disney fan which is why they used it but I find it hard to take seriously tbh

My first thought was Buzz Lightyear and it's not a name I would use but please don't let that put you off. You have to do what's good for you!

Tom from McFly named his son Buzz, so it can be done!

Could you agree to use Buzz as a nickname from birth, but give him a more, well, respectful legal name? Makes me think of Aladdin when genie is a bee buzzing around in his ear. I dunno. Not a name I would use, but it's your child. I girl I work with is due in a couple weeks and naming her son Bear, and most people don't prefer my daughters name Laken (lay-kin)
