A word to the wise...

OH and I have been having a lot of trouble getting Ruby to sleep recently, although she sleeps well once down. She is appearing very tired but just coming to life when we put her down, rolling around the cot, shouting, babbling etc, for aaaages, before eventually getting overtired and very upset. This was happening whether she had had long naps in the day or not.

Anyway we have discovered it is Calpol that seems to be the problem! Ruby is teething, so some evenings we have been giving it to her before bed, and it is on these evenings we've been having the problems.

I've looked at the bottle and it contains several E numbers so I guess it's plausible.

does it really, it makes my LO so sleepy :winkwink: aww hun what you going to try in stead of calpol x

I think we're going to give it late afternoon, like about 5pm instead, if we really have to.

I don't like giving it anyway, but you don't want her to be in pain!

its a bugger teething is, i bought my son some iburofen and that works sooo fast, i think its better than calpol :)

That explains alot, my LO never sleeps when we have had to give her calpol! She didnt even have her usual daytime naps!

Maybe hun. It makes Aidan very sleepy but it could affect babies in different ways:D

If she is in pain you can get teething crystals from boots that worked for aidan a treat

You just rub it on their gums
xx

the calbruprofen is what we use too, never had a problem but it does have e colours too. Calpol seems to knock him out too! Do the other brands like tescos have colourings? Perhaps you could try them.

Wonder why they need colouring though! All it does it turn your stuff pink :grr:

Yeah I guess things like E numbers definitely affect different babies in different ways - my OH was a hyperactive child and was on a limited diet because of it, so maybe Ruby has inherited some of this :(

I wish I could use teething crystals etc but we cannot get her to open her mouth for long enough, arrrrrgh

Also it uses the sweetener Maltitol which has almost the same GI as ordinary sugar! It can also cause digestive discomfort apparently.

What about trying ibuprofen? It can be better for teething as itll help reduce any swelling too.

and it STILL tastes crap!!
though I have just been ill and had a stomach ache and couldn't bear paracetamol so I was stealing Finns calpol, it was a life saver lol.

Finn hates sweet tasting things, he's such a lil weirdo.

Thank you!
I went searching and searching for why calpol makes H horribly windy!

Funny I just noticed exactly the same thing today! My LO is teething badly too and I gave him his first dose, and he also became extremely hyper and un-sleepy! I looked at the ingredients and saw all the E numbers and thought uh oh....

I think I heard somewhere that they had removed the ingredient that was in there that made them sleepy? Iykwim!

Lo won't take calpol, but I never had a problem with Nurofen. Maybe worth a try.

Jacob does that anyway, Calpol or no Calpol :dohh:

Not a massive fan of Calpol after I read the ingredients. I believe some parents routinely dose their child with the stuff to make them fall asleep.
