I posted this over in Pregnancy After Loss but I haven't gotten any replies yet. So I thought I would post over here and see if anyone knows.

Can a UTI cause a miscarriage?
I just found out I have a bad uti. When they did testing they checked my hcg level and they were low for how far along I am suppose to be. They said they can't give me an answer until I get my levels checked again in two days. I am nervous. I lost my last baby at 21 weeks due to incompetent cervix (I was dilated 2 cm for 3 weeks, my doctor checked at my weekly appointments) and chorioamnionitis. I really want this to be our rainbow baby but I'm scared it's not going to be.
Please any advice you have to offer while I wait for my hormones to be checked again would be wonderful!

Not sure about a UTI, but I do know they are common during pregnancy. Left untreated they can cause problems with the pregnancy, I currently have a bladder infection and they are treating it with medicine. I imagine they will treat the UTI with medicine. So, like I said before, if it's left untreated it probably could harm the pregnancy, but I imagine you are in contact with your doctors about it. Good luck xx

I'm not 100% sure but I know that they are really common in pregnancy so I wouldn't think that it would be a common cause of a miscarriage.

Try not to worry, just concentrate on feeling better, drink loads of water and cranberry juice til you think you're going to float your kidneys!!

Get better soon and I hope your results look better tomorrow :flower:

Like the others, I'm not really sure. I wouldn't have thought so, maybe if left untreated & tge infection worsened & you got a high temp?

Really hoPe that everything is ok x

I have a UTI too, I'm 5+3 was given antibiotics and was assured these do not cause mc and are quite cOmmon in pregnancy. Try to take it easy and drink plenty of water!
What are your hcg levels for where your at in your pregnancy?

I picked up my antibiotics today and have started them. I didn't really have any symptoms of a uti. I went to the doctors because I was spotting (which I read can sometimes happen with a uti). However I think I might have had it before I knew I was pregnant. A week before I found out I was pregnant I went to my doctor because something just felt off and I have some strange discharge (sorry tmi). She checked for a yeast infection and everything came back normal. The weird feeling didn't go away but I brushed it off because I went to the doctors and had some labs done and everything was fine. So I am just worried that it has been fermenting and I am not sure if that would harm my baby.
Thanks for your replies!

I've been told that UTI can cause a miscarriage if left untreated for so long. That's what happened to one of my friends who miscarried at 18 weeks because she thought UTI was no big deal and would get a medicine for it later. She realized she was wrong and of course, she was extremely upset. So if you think you have UTI, I highly recommend you go see your doctor ASAP.

375 for 6 weeks:cry: and they didn't see anything on the ultrasound. They said they wouldn't see anything until hcg was around 1500 or something like that. I'm kind of confused because when I went to my doctor the week before to have my pregnancy confirmed she did a pelvic exam and commented on my uterus being bigger than it was when I wasn't pregnant and was about on track. I assumed the baby was growing which made my uterus grow but since my levels are low and the ultrasound shows nothing I am just confused.

I spotted from two days before I got a BFP to the day I was diagnosed with UTI, last Saturday...now it could have been implantation, but since drinking more water and taking the antibiotics no more spotting! Fxed

Do you have more than one level to compare it to? Don't focus so much on the number more on if the number is doubling every 48-72 hours. Also depending on how fast you develop and the accuracy and advancedness:) of the machine makes a difference on what is seen and when. Some women don't see anything until 8wks some as early as 5.

Sorry I meant to say UTI do not cause mc if treated. Any infection left untreated can be harmful during pregnancy.

Call your doc just to make sure, but in the meantime, drink plenty of water, look for bio yogurt with probiotic cultures and try to find some sugar-free cranberry juice. Also go for a super healthy diet for a few days, no junk food or extra sugar.

Hi there, a friend of the family had a UTI unknown to her and she actually had the antibiotics given to her but it was too late her waters broke and went into labour at just 19 weeks and lost her very long awaited lil girl
Obviously i dont know all of her circumstances but i no she was about 40 something, if that makes any difference? Im sure yours would be fine at this stage tho! Another friend of mine water infecs one after the other with her lil girl and everything was fine :) xx

DIdn't want to read and run. I don't know much about UTIs in pregnancy. I will keep you and your little one in my prayers. Sending hugs:hugs:

So sorry for your loss :hugs:

I had a UTI in early pregnancy (didnt know I was pregnant at the time, as thought the symptoms were the UTI!)

I did a pregnancy test, when AF was late & it was :bfn:.....The symptoms continued, even when the UTI was easing, then one morning I almost was  when I smelt a jar of lazy garlic in the cupboard....So thought id better test again & :bfp:

My Doctor said that the UTI could have affected the 1st result :flower: Just to give you hope

Praying all is well for you :hugs:

uti's can cause a miscarriage if left untreated as they can make the bladder cramp which in turn can make the uterus contract. If treated though it shouldn't cause a miscarriage, early miscarriages usually happen for no known reason. I hope your hcg continues to rise and everything is fine with your baby x

I asked my BF this when i had a UTI a couple weeks ago. She is a nurse at a children's hospital (one of the top in Canada) If the infection is localized to the bladder it would not cause a miscarriage ( this is the case at the start of the infection) but when it is left untreated for to long it will start going up to your kidneys and that is when it can become systemic and cause a miscarriage.

My doctor told me that a UTI can cause a miscarriage, but they are very easily treated with antibiotics. Unless the UTI got SEVERE then I wouldn't worry too much. Just take the meds and you'll be fine!

Well I am def. miscarrying. I will spare you the gruesome details but I have no doubt at this point. I don't know if it was from the UTI although I am positive I have had this UTI since before I even knew I was pregnant. I didn't have many of the UTI symptoms but something was def. off and was tested for only vaginal infections. I was surprised when everything came back normal because I was still feeling off. I have never had any kind of infection before so it was difficult for me to pin point it.
Well good luck ladies and thank you for all your replies! I will be trying again as soon as I am given the ok.

I am so sorry you are having to go through all of this, it is something I wish no woman every had to experience :hugs:

Typically a UTI would not cause a miscarriage, unless you took antibiotics that are unsafe for pregnant women to treat it. If the UTI turns into a bladder infection and it gets bad enough then the infection may get into your entire system and pose a risk to the baby but the chances of that aren't very high. You would be very sick before it could get to that point!
