I started weaning my dd 2 weeks ago and she's doing really well but she is currently having 1st stage jars which are just puree. I don't want to leave her on puree for too long because I've heard babies can get issues with textured foods and my hv said its ok to give mashed food after 23 weeks. The problem is I don't have the facilities to prepare food myself until she goes onto finger food so I was wondering if I could give her 2nd stage jars which are mashed food but says they should be from 7 months? Is there anything in them that she shouldn't be having or is it simply because of the lumps that they say 7 months? I hope to get her on finger food in the next couple of weeks but she's not ready yet so I need a way to introduce different textures.

My understanding is that you should generally stick with pureed food until 26 weeks if you're spoon feeding. I think the lumpy food might be too much for a baby that young to handle as they can't quite manage the lumps with their tongues yet and it could be a choking hazard. I think that's the reason they say 7+ months. If you want to start offering non-pureed foods, if it was me, I'd wait until 6 months and then introduce some finger foods as planned. There is a risk of not introducing enough lumpy or finger foods meaning you end up with a picky eater but I'm pretty sure it comes much later (as in babies who are 11-12 months and still only on purees). Your baby is still so young yet, so I wouldn't be in a hurry. But I will say that finger foods, when it is time to introduce them, are much easier than purees, so hang in there. It's not much longer.

I was advised to wean my man early because of reflux and weight issues. I do make most homemade but when i use the 7 mth jars i pass it through a small sieve to get rid of most of the lumps and then just stir in a spoon or 2 of the lumpy texture. Ellas kitchen are not so lumpy as other brands so you could try them. you will get a feel pretty quicky for your babys tolerance. Its my understanding that they have a gag reflex which moves further back their mouths as they mature.

Thank you. I was told by my health visitor that babies will just gag and clear the food themselves if you don't panic. I was determined to wait until 6 months to wean but had to start early so I'm finding it all very confusing. I wanted to go pretty much straight on to finger foods but now I'm having to wait as she's not ready. I think I might stick with the puree for another couple of weeks and try mashed when she's a bit more use to eating.
