Hi, I'm over 41 weeks now and have had 2 membrane sweeps, one on Wed, one today and gonna have another on Monday morning. The both I've had were not successful. I'm going into hospital on Wednesday to begin the induction of labour if I haven't gone before then. People are saying to me to eat ripe Papaya fruit which can help trigger labour, which would be great as I want to avoid being induced at the hospital but I've read that Papaya should be avoided during pregnancy. Now i'm confused  ??

Papaya that is unripe to any extent can cause uterine contractions which is why it is recommended that you avoid it. I would speak to your health care provider before choosing to try something like that though

Why does it cause contractions??? That is a bit concerning! Does it give the poops??? Anything that gives you the poops can cause contractions. I have had papaya and I was fine. I have heard that licorice root can cause contradctions. You can buy it at the pharmacy in capsules, or you can just go buy natural licorice (if you like it).

pineapple is supposed to encourage labour too - have no idea why though!

It's unripe papaya and loads of pineapple. It's an enzyme in the fruits (papain for papaya and bromelain for pineapple). Canned pineapple or juice doesn't have any effect, and really you'd want to be eating pineapple stem. Not so sure about the green papaya though as to concentrations in the fruit. I think papain also can lower progesterone which is something that happens when you start labour. Lots of licorice can also alter your hormone levels (though testosterone I think?). They also use the papain as a meat tenderizer. I've vaguely wondered about eating meat tenderizer...

Yeah I have heard unripe papaya can work, not sure HOW it works though?

i'm due on monday and really inpatient so i've been looking up all the ways to induce labour so if she's even 1 day over i'll be ready lol. i've heard about pineapple and currys and stuff and it seems to be the only reason they help is because they encourage bowel movements, a lot of bowel movements lol which can help because of the contractions. so i think you'd get the same result if it was going to work just from eating a lot of fibre and fruit. Good luck and congratulations! at least you know you'll have bubba soon
