Hi girls, wanted a new ring and been looking online to buy one. Seen a ring i like, and i obviously want it to be silver, you know the real stuff so that it doesn't rub off and leave a green mark on my finger .. do you know what i mean?

So i have seen one and the discription says 'Rhodium over .925 Sterling Silver'

.. Does that mean it is real silver, or?

I think that means it's silver but has been rhodium plated. It means it will withstand scratches etc better than if it were just silver (as silver is quite a soft metal, and rhodium is up there with platinum)

I think it is real but its been coated so it wont get tarnished/ scratched etc.

^ it tells you on there but it wont let me copy and paste it lol xx

Basically the rhodium plate is to stop the silver tarnishing and the 925 Sterling Silver is pure silver (which is very soft) hardened apparently x

Rhodium is often used to plate sterling silver jewellery, which helps to reduce the tarnishing of silver. Rhodium is from the platinum family of precious metals and is one of the rarest elements on earth. Rhodium is bright white in colour and extremely hard making it ideal for jewellery plating as its very scratch resistant. Rhodium has been used for the last few years to plate silver jewellery as it is very resistant to corrosion, so will protect your silver from tarnishing and a sterling silver item that has been rhodium plated is known as “platinum enhanced sterling silver”. Generally a silver item that is rhodium plated will be 6 to 10 times more tarnish resistant than an untreated 925 sterling silver item. The rhodium plating on a jewellery piece will last about a year approximately with average use and a slight dulling of the high rhodium shine will be noticed when this happens. Most of our beautiful jewellery is plated with rhodium to keep your item free from scratches and tarnish.

^^ there you go. That is from the link Cariad_Bach put up

Rhodium plating slowly wears off, but it offers extra protection. i have a rhodium and gold links sweetie

Rhodium is the same stuff they use to make white gold. It's brighter than silver and tends to keep its finish longer.
The problem with it is that it will rub off and you'll have to get it re-rhodium plated (they call it "dipping") and that can be pricey without a warranty of sorts.
My wedding band is white gold and I have to get it redipped about every 8 months because I'm extremely allergic to nickel. Once the rhodium starts to fade my finger breaks out.
