DS started to come out in a few random spots last Sunday night (so 7 days ago) and had a few spots since (7 or 8) but it never progressed into anything. He has acted absolutely fine all week, no temp etc. Then tonight we got him ready for bed and discovered this - see pic. He also has three spots on his back. Could it be chickenpox after this long....even though he seems absolutely fine? DH will take him to the docs tomorrow but just wanted opinions. Or could it be something else? DD has been vaccinated so we haven't been through this before.

TIA xx

ETA - he doesn't seem to be itchy.

It could easily be something else, you really can't tell from the picture. Chicken pox tends to start with what appears to be a cold and then develops into itchy spots. Take him to the doctor as there are literally dozens of things that rash could be.

Thanks for the reply. DS hasn't had a cold for around a month, so guessing it is something else then. I thought it always came with a fever too, hence asking the question, but thought the spots looked chickenpox'y from my unreliable friend Dr Google. DH will be taking him to docs tomorrow. Wonder what it could be.....will update thread once I find out.....

Kids usually get a fever with chicken pox, yeah. Chicken pox also come up like little blisters, they have a head that bursts and then crusts over. So if not like that then definitely could be something different. They actually kind of look like folliculitis to me from that picture, but I'm not a doctor and the pic is hard to see, so def get it checked!

One of my twins had one day of fever with the chickenpox, the other twin had a bit of temperature for a couple of days and that is it. Neither found the chickenpox itchy and neither suffered very much. They caught CP from my OH and he was SO SO covered but he didn't find them itchy either. He did have a fever though and felt rotten for about a week.
From the pic I would say it is chickenpox but it is weird that they should break out again so much later. They do last up to 14 days though, so it might still be that.
Our doctor says not to bring children with CP into the surgery as that makes them spread to others.

Ds had a slight runny nose but that was it. We were actually at Disneyland and he was having loads of fun. Put him in the bath at the hotel to find his back was covered 🙈 Didn't realise he had it before that!

Thanks, maybe it is chickenpox then - we're really not sure, it's just so strange. To qualify for an appointment at our local surgery you have to speak with the doc on the phone first so will get DH to have chat on phone to our doctor to see what we should do. I'd like to confirm it is definitely that, especially as it hasn't taken a usual course, and is certainly miles apart from the horrible illness I remember when the itching drove me half mad, and I was definitely feeling very poorly. Alex has spent the afternoon giggling, dancing and playing peekaboo.

My son had it a few years ago now, he was totally fine apart from a runny nose, which was usual for him anyway! He only had about 20 spots which were slightly irritating him but it wasn't bad at all, it was frustrating we had to be isolated when he was feeling fine!

Both my girls were absolutely fine with chicken pox- one night of itching and that was it-- both happy, smiling and playing--but it looked awful! Both were covered and it took a while to heal.

I never would have known with dd...she was fine and nothing out of the ordinary. she got it twice!! xx

Chickenpox confirmed! Doc wanted to see him and I instructed DH to keep him strapped into pushchair away from other kids. Doc said it looks like a very mild case. Hope such a mild case means he gets his immunity!

Thanks for your input xx

Virasoothe and piriton are great if it does start to bother him. They itched ds when they started to scab

Just in case anyone is looking up this question in the future.....it has now been decided it is definitely NOT chickenpox. The spots are still here and still continuing to appear 3.5 weeks on - all still mainly clustered down DS's side. The doctor has diagnosed a staph skin infection and he is now on antibiotics x

Gosh poor boy! What a wait to get the proper diagnosis! I hope he will feel better soon!

Fortunately he seems to be fine other than the spots, which don't seem to be bothering him :)

My youngest in particular was absolutely fine with the chicken pox, he didn't even get a runny nose. My eldest was mostly fine although I do remember one night with a fever and runny nose. It's been over a year since my youngest had it and they've both been exposed to chicken pox a fair bit since as they attend childcare and have never had it since so I assume they got a good dose of it, I was concerned as my eldest didn't get many spots but my youngest was covered and sailed through it. Didn't have issues with itching either, my eldest was 1 and youngest just turned 2.

Oh sorry just seen the update, hope his spots are gone soon :)

Hope it's getting better. I would say it didn't really sound like chickenpox. Chickenpox usually starts with a bit of a cold (though sometimes this can be up to a week or two earlier) and then the spots are really obvious. They look at first like little pus filled yellow blisters with red around them and then break and scab over usually within a day or two. More keep coming out, but they have a life cycle and usually start to disappear relatively quickly even as new ones appear. You can get a mild case though and that means you can get them again. I had them four times as a child! The first 3 times were relatively mild and the last one was awful. Hope he's feeling better now.

Sorry to hear that! Like I said in my previous post it looks like folliculitis, which is usually caused by staph - antibiotics will clear that up easily.
