Title says it all really...we are going to call our daughter 'Joni', but OH thinks people will pronounce it 'Jonny' and mistake her for a boy. What do you guys think?

If people do think it's confusing then we will spell it 'Joanie' instead. Which spelling do you prefer?

Thank you! :hugs:

i did think straight away it meant joanie, i personally think an a in it makes it less confusing but i didnt think johnny right enough but some people might, lovely name by the way x

When I read you thread title I though it was a weird spelling of the word "johnny"

If its to be pronounced Joannie then thats how I would spell it. (I know Joni Mitchell is spelt this way but I think its different if someone is well known as you hear how its supposed to be pronounced IYKWIM)

My initial instinct was that you were having a boy. Maybe its because im from uk that I thought that.

I read it as johny! but really like that for a girl - sorry!

Thank you for your replies! I'll have to think about it...I do prefer the spelling Joni but I don't want her to have a lifetime of being mistaken for a man!

Might be the first time ever I back down and tell OH he was right after all??!! :haha:

I read it as Joanie - it's a lovely name.
Perhaps you could still leave the 'e' off the end to give it a bit of a different spelling - Joani? x

I love Joni

I'm a pre-school leader and one of my mums is Joni - she is american but no one has ever asked her how to pronounce her name etc

Spelling and pronounciation is always a tricky one hun. I'm Sarah and many people still mis-spell it!! Even though I'm 27 lol.

Were having Emily if a girl but I am spelling it Emilie/Emillie (haven't quite decided) but some people have already asked how to pronounce it when I've sent messages etc to them with regards to names picked.

I read it as 'Joanie' but i like the singer Joni Mitchell anyway so i know how to say the name, hehe! I can't imagine too many people would really think it was meant to be pronounced as 'Jonny'.

I think it's a much nicer way to spell than Joanie :)

I know its pronounced Joanie but my brain still said johnny first.

I read it as Joanie, think its a very nice name. I do like the PP suggestion to spell it Joani, its a nice twist, but think Joni is lovely if u decide on that xx

I thought 50 / 50 Jonny (as in Joni erikson tada) or joanie (as in Joni Mitchell)
I would probably have plumped for Jonny.

Humm, at first I read it as jonny but by nature of the question I knew that it must be something else so I did wonder if it was Joo-nee but I was saying it with French accent lol!! X

I read it as Joanie, like Joni Mitchell, but Joani is cute to!

That's my name :) but my mum spelled it Jonee  I've been called Johnny a lot in my life! In saying that I never cared and it's nice having a unique name, I've never met another. Either spelling is obviously pronounced Joanie to me and I learned at a young age to say "yeah like Joni Mitchell"... Even though I've never heard one of her songs! :flower:
