Title says it all.........still in limbo about BF and FF but 99% sure I am FF but was wandering if you can take painkillers while BF? Normal ones like ibroprohen, paracetemol, cocodamol?

I know you can't take ibuprofen when pregnant so would assume you can't when breastfeeding too, I'd imagine paracetemol are fine as you can take them in pregnancy but I'd deffo ask your GP/MW first to be sure x

I'm sure it was only not taking ibruprofen in 1st tri then you can take.
I asked the pharmasist if i could take ibruprofen with codine when Eve was a week old cos I was getting horrid migranes that paracetamol or ibrfoen alone couldnt get rid of and she said it was fine so got some.
Turns out I'm allergic to Codine so didnt work out too well for me :haha: but Eve was fine :)

KellyMom is a great source of info on BFing - she has a list of pain meds here and how safe they all are during BFing (and a column for their safety in pregnancy too). Ibuprofen is completely safe apparently, as is paracetamol (acetaminophen). She has a whole section on "Is this safe when breastfeeding?" covering food, medications, herbs, alcohol, diet, smoking, etc.

If I remember right from my other two kids, they recommended ibuprofen more than the other meds while BF

You should not take ibuprofen, but perecitamol is ok.

When I was in hospital they knew I was bfing and they gave me ibrofen for my after pains so I would say safe if the hospitals are giving it out

I was given ibuprofren twice a day in hospital after giving birth for after pains, I think it´s safe. I was given codeine while pregnant too so i think it´s safe

ibuprofen is safe while bfing. I was offered that while in the hospital after giving birth & was given a prescription for ibuprofen when I left the hospital.

if you are in the uk, in the nhs book there is a chart which tells u what u can take, for various things, i dont have mine on me, but im sure a lovely lady on here may! x

After DD was born they gave me a giant container of 800mg ibuprofen with directions to take it every 6 hours and they knew I was BFing, so I'd say it's OK.

Ibuprofen is fine when you're breastfeeding. You can't take it when pregnant because it can cause a valve in the fetal heart to close - it closes shortly after birth anyway and babies can have ibuprofen too.
