Hi ladies,
this is my first post in 2nd tri (13 weeks tom!)
Anyway, I'm looking for a few opinions and would be interested in anyone else's experiences.
OH and I got married end of July but booked honeymoon to India over xmas, I fell pregnant (lovely but accidently!) so was not expecting to be pregnant whilst there. I spoke to e few medical proffessionals who all said that I really shouldn't travel if it wasn't necessary (as it was a malaria infected area). So we decided to cancel the trip today. Both feeling a bit deflated but trying to stay positive (rememberering it's the right thing to do). If we manage to get anything back on insurance we hope to book something else. But was wondering if anyone had had these or a similar experience whilst pregnant? Did you get your money back? Do you think that we are being over the top.
I will be 17 weeks when I travel.
thanks in advance
sam x

I guess it really depends on the type of cancellation insurance you have and you may need to provide a letter from your health professionals who advised you not to go, esp if you have cancelled on medical grounds.

yep I've spoken to them and they've explained what I need to do to make a claim - it includes my doctor completeing part of the form. It sounds as if we're in with a chance, fingers crossed!

I hope you get your money back :) I travelled to the states and Jamaica in my first tri, but I probably wouldnt have gone anywhere with a malaria risk either.

Where you thinking of going instead?

Thanks Cloberella, really want some summer sun, as we've looking forward to this for soooo long! Thinking Caribbean, maybe Barbados or Antigua (went to Jamaica with my ex, so probably not a great idea to go there as a newlywed!!) or Mauritius? Not sure what that's like? We're wondering if we might get lucky and get a last minute deal??

Haven't had the same experience but would have done the same thing in your situation. You really need the vaccinations going somewhere like that and if you can't have them when pregnant it's really not worth the worry.

Such a shame you had to cancel your honeymoon though, I hope you get some money back!

An idea on places for you - Sharm El Sheikh is really hot all year round and if you go to a nice complex you'll be safe from any food & drink worries. They don't have mozzies there either.

good idea Sairycake, thanks for that.
cloberella - did you cope ok in the heat out there? I'm a girl who loves the sun, so reckon I'll be ok but some poeple are suggesting it oculd be abit much as I'm pregnant?Although I fully intend to be v careful obv' lots of water, keeping out of the sun at midday etc

I dont know the answer to the insurance question but I 100% think you did the right thing. Outside of europe you stand a very high chance of "Deli Belly"/malaria etc and whilst a fully fit adult could fight through it, to try fight it when your immune system is low and also run the risk of giving little one something to fight too isnt worth it. Maybe that sounds a bit harsh but I also got married in july and havent had a honeymoon for the exact same reason x If you dont manage to book somthing before baby is born dont worry, theres plenty of time for a honeymoon later in life :)

Yeah it wasn't too bad; I mostly stayed in the pool/sea when it got too much for me and I coped.

I'm ginger too so if I was fine you should be :p

Is there any way your doctor can give you a letter for a medical exemption? I'm not sure what cancellation policy you have.

I went on holidays (to the US) when I was about 20 weeks along, it's the perfect time because your morning sickness is usually gone but your bump is still small enough to not interfere with walking, etc

Hope you get a different vacation!

I'd LOVE to go on holiday somewhere sunny at the moment! I agree that it's worth avoiding somewhere with a high malaria risk though and good luck getting your money back.

It's a great stage in your pregnancy to travel though and, personally, I think it's worth having a honeymoon before you have children to worry about. We made sure we had some exotic coupley holidays while we were trying since that kind of thing is likely to be unaffordable and impractical once the little one is here (for a few years at least) although well worth the sacrifice.

Hi hun

We recently (october) went on our honeymoon to Mexico, all incl and it was great- I'd asked before I travelled about risks etc but was just told to keep active during the flight & to have fun.

There was plenty to enjoy,we stayed in a nice hotel and we had a fab time!

Hope u get somewhere nice xxx
