Cate or Kate? (or Catherine/Katherine?)

My DH and I really like the name Cate or Kate for a girl. I'm not a huge fan of C/Katherine or Katie, but they don't bother me. I think that C/Kate is such a great name. Do you think that it works as a full name? I was thinking that "Kate" seemed nickname-y, whereas "Cate" looked like more of a full name. What do you think? Or do you think we should stick with the standard C/Katherine for the full name, and C/Kate for the nickname? Also, do you prefer Cate or Kate spelling? I think "Cate" is prettier and more unique, but I feel like she'll spend her whole like saying that her name is "Kate with a C" in order to not have people misspell it. Thoughts?

Yes, she will spend her whole life spelling out Cate -with-a-c-not-a-k. That is almost certain. If you want to call her Kate then people will assume it is with a K

If you call her Katherine/Catherine/Kathryn/Catharine or any variation, she will also spend her life spelling it out. I can tel you that from personal experience!

I think Kate is fine as a full name these days if you like it. There's no reason not to spell it with a C if that's what you want to do but she will get the spelling issue.

Kate is lovely as a first full time and it doesn't need to be K/Catherine. I love Kate as a name but niece is Katie so too confussing lol

I do think they will spend the rest of there life spelling Cate though. It's bad enough with Sarah lol. However I am going to be different and spell Emily - Emillie

I'm a Katherine called Kate, constantly telling people its Katherine with a K!!

I was Katy when I was young and become Kate as I got older.... I think its a really flexible name and it can change and develop with her personality.

i would choose a full name, for applying for a job or something. i personally like K better

I like it spelled both ways., Cate is nice, and so what if she has to tell people the spelling of her name, at least it will be different and the way some people are going with baby names we will ALL have to confirm spellings sooner or later lol

I think you should do what you want to do. I personally like Katherine with a K, not a huge fan of either Cate or Kate but it's your name not ours! My sister named her daughter Emily but spells it Emylee, so she will have to correct people later on in life. With the names and spellings we have now it's most likely that a lot of people will have to correct people on the spelling of their name, so don't let that factor make your decision.

My name is Katarina... people have hard time spelling it..so Katherine, or Catherine is gonna be same thing...but I LOVE my name. and I love the way it sounds.

I hate when people call me ,,Kat,, I dont react and dont answer, when they call me that.
So I think you child will have to suffer being called: Cat.... which is awful...

ANYWAY! Great name choices...Katherine or Catherine are old, beautiful names, carried for generation...and I cannt wait my own little Katarina some day....

Lucky you!!! I hate when people call me Kat....I always intoruce myself as Katarina, I love it, and I wanna be called that way. Its people lazyness here, in New York,!

I like Catherine or Kate

They are both lovely names but I think Cate would just invite people to screw up the spelling.

I'd say pick the name you like most. If you like Kate, then go with it. You don't have to use Katherine and shorten it.
