I think the noise thing sounds like a good idea. My LO often wakes up just after hubby and I go to bed, and I reckon it's because it suddenly goes quiet.
We started CC a week a go, as we got to the point where he was waking every hour or more through the night. He cried for about an hour on the first night, then slept 7 hours straight. We had 3 nights of 7 hour stretches, but have now regressed slightly to a 5 hour stretch. Two night wakings is still loads better than before though, and we're griping to work on cutting out the second night waking soon, as I know he doesn't need it.
Calling our method CC might be a bit misleading. We found that LO would just crawl around his cot whilst crying when we left, and would just get worse when we went to check him. My husband therefore stays in the room until he's asleep and just gently puts his hand on his back or arm to settle him. Last night though, LO seemed to settle better without being touched so we're hoping that he's getting used to settling himself now.
