I know that this thread has been done before but I just cant contain my amazement at Doctors who insist that the cd21 test must be done on cd21!

Yesterday my doctor told me the following:
1- Ovulation occurs 7 days before your period and this is when the test should be done to see if im ovulating
2- As my cycles are irregular and long (around 35 days) I cant book a date in advance for my cd21 test (on to a winner I thought!) and I have missed it this cycle as I am on cd22 but have not yet ovulated (oh dear I thought)
3- Therefore when I next get my period I must ring up any book a test for day 21!!

I said that surely the cd21 test is based on a theoretical 28 day cycle where you ovulate on cd14 so that cd 21 is mid way between ovulation and your period and progesterone is higest. I also said that as I charted I could tell when I ovulate and book the test for 7 days after to which she said to forget when I ovulate and just book the test for day 21 once I start my next cycle.

What do you do eh?

Love and babydust

yes you are right its based on a 28 day cycle and as we know lots of women dont have 28 days cycle.
i do though so i dont know what to suggest.
If you know when you are ov then you could try and time it that way.

someone else may be able to give yo some better advice on that one.

my cycles were 28days one mth and 34 the next, so first cd21 came bk i O , 2nd one said i didnt ( i knew i hadnt even O yet !) and i was guna get clomid etc....turns out i got preg that mth !!

Thanks both,
I did say to her that I will know when I have ovulated and could time the test for after that. But she seemed to be getting annoyed with me talking about ovulation and said to forget all about ovulation and just wait until day 21 of my cycle.

I dont feel that I can ignore her and go in for the test when I think it should be done though. Therefore it will be a waste of time!

I would either go in and have it done on CD21 and when it comes back as not having OV'd see what the doc says OR just get it done at 7dpo. Personally I would ignore my doc
I have had it done twice recently - 1st one I went at MY 7DPO not cd21 and came back really high and that I had ov'd. THe second time the doc noticed that I was on CD21 and so took blood there and then and it came back no OV (I didn't OV til CD19 according to opks and temps!) :dohh:

Oh my word, some Doctors really are rubbish, aren't they? I was having 21 day cycles when I first came off the pill, ovulating on day 14/15 with a short luteal phase. My GP believed me, but the gynae he sent me to see insisted that all women have a 14 day luteal phase so I must be ovulating around day 7!! I went in for my first "CD21" test on the day that I thought was correct, then the next cycle did a second test on the day he thought was correct. When the result came back low for the second test, he announced that I had had an anovulatory cycle, although I knew I ovulated a day after the test was done! At this point I gave up on the twit and went to see a private specialist, who was quite happy to accept my version of things.

So, maybe you should try to get two tests done? Or perhaps go and see with a different GP to get a second opinion... you don't really want to be stuck with a useless one through this whole process!

to be fair GP' s are called GP's for a reason.
they are GENERAL PRACTIONERS. They are not FS! But somehow you need to convince them that this is serious and thats the hard bit. Sometimes they dont listen

You prob wont be able to go into for 2 blood tests on 1 month as he/she still needs to give me the form or whatever it is they do.
Why dont you just say its cd21 but go in after you have ov...has someone already suggested this, if so sorryfor repeating!

be assertive the your doc!

Ha ha, love it!

Thing is, this doctor is actually better than the first I was seeing and the first just said to stop worrying about and let things happen. At least tis one is ordering tests (even if they are at the wrong time!!)

If I were you i would go in on Day 21 as they said but also book an appt for 7DPO.. keep the GP happy but also give you the result you need.

Maybe its easier for her to refer you to the specialist if it looks like you are not ov-ing hence the reason she is insisting on you doing it on day 21.

good luckx

i was having the same problem, i was told to go in on CD 21, so i did twice and it came back low, but obv i knew i hadn't ovulated yet, so i've been charting for the past 7 months and i've got an appointment 2morrow to do the test again, but its actually gonna be CD 28, i ovulated on CD 19, it'll be 8DPO 2mor so hopfully she'll be happy with the results an then won't need me to do it again ,.an then hopfully she'll then refere us. annoying doctor.

It would make me want to lie about which cd I was on - just to get the test done - when you think you are about 7 dpo.

Best wishes - that is definitely annoying.
