Being only 19 I've never been for a smear test before. My mw came round before and told me I should have one at my 6 week check. I've heard they can be painful and uncomfortable and although I've managed to survive through possibly the most painful and uncomfortable thing in the world (i.e labour/childbirth!) I'm still a bit anxious about it. Is it really as bad as people make out?

There is nothing to a smear test, they are a tad uncomfortable but shouldnt be painful :happydance: I am surprised your midwife wants you to have one at 6 weeks, I had one at 3 months and it came back abnormal due to hormonal changes, had to wait until 6 months. So if you do have one early and it comes back abnormal dont freak out.

I'm also 19 and never had one (thanks god), but I have still not been told to have one :S
You'll be fine hun, as you say you have gone through the worst :)

I've been having them done once a year since I became sexually active.. It is a bit uncomfortable but it shouldn't be painful at all.. Especially since you've been through childbirth, you shouldn't have a problem with your smear.. :)

I had one at my 6 week check up and I hardly felt it. It was also the first one I've ever had!

As the others say, shouldn't really hurt, but will be uncomfortable.

They are not painful, a bit uncomfortable. More than likely the discomfort comes more from having a doctor being down in that area.

I can tolerate them but even til this day I feel awkward when I have to assume the position to do so.

It is very important to have regular pap tests done to detect abnormal cells, etc.

I have been having smear tests since I was 19 (now 30) after having my first son and never felt a thing, they have never been painful or uncomfortable, in fact a couple of times I hadnt realised it had been done as the nurse kept me talking thoughtout.

Are they any more uncomfortable than having a sweep? I had a sweep and didn't find it uncomfortable at all when others had

I found the sweep really uncomfortable and painful, but I wasnt fully engaged when they induced me, but my waters had already broken, so that may explain why. So for me the Sweep was alot more painful than the Smear Tests as I dont feel anything when I have mine.
