My baby is currently on a thickened formula for his reflux and seems to be doing quite well but i would like him to be on the gold formula with added nutrients like omega 3, nucleotides and lutein, he also gets badly constipated on the thickened formula and cries when he poos. Do you think i should stick with the AR formula or try him on the gold formula? He's not a spilly baby he has silent reflux

I'm not too sure to be honest hun. Amy is on the AR formula and any time I have moved her to anything else the reflux has played up more. Although with your LO having silent reflux I'm not sure what difference that will make. I would maybe talk to your Dr or HV about it xx

I wouldnt advise gold formula for a baby with reflux hun. It's too heavy to digest. Just stick to the AR formula until he's 6+ months old, it has enough nutrients. Omar was suffering from reflux, we tried gold formula at 4weeks & he used to cry from pain as it was soo diffiult to digest, he got constipated, green smelly poo because of all the additional stuff in it. xx

ETA: just offer him coll boiled water for his constipation & massage his tummy with warm olive oil before his bedtime with lots of legs cycling.

thanks for the advice ladies, maybe i will just stick with the AR formula then as i don't want to upset his tummy, i will then switch to the gold formula around 6 months and see how he goes. do you find that the AR formula blocks the teat?

You need to move 1 size up when you start using AR formula. The best way to prepare it is using a long baby spoon to give it a good stir. Omar was on teat 3 (Dr browns bottles) at 12 weeks with the AR formula xx

AS nmwb78 said hun - you will need to move up a teat size. Amy is on size 3 Dr Browns teats. Also - I originally was making the bottles with warm water - this seems to clump the AR formula more. If you use room temp water it seems a lot better x

Stay on the AR formula. While those extra nutrients are a good selling point; there is no real evidence that they are necessary and in the UK several companies have had to change their packaging because their claims about such nutrients are not backed up by scientific evidence, and thus it was ruled illegal. Every formula company likes to claim their product is 'closest to breastmilk' and has the most added special ingredients; but you really have to look past that and choose which one is most suited to your baby.

try giving him a little drink of cooled boiled water at least once a day....should help his tummy xxx

Arianna is also on AR formula for her reflux and we use a step 2 nipple, it made her really constipated at first so the doctor recommended 1tsp of dark karo syrup per 2oz of formula once a day. Now her poops are still kinda solid but much softer than they were at first. I would keep him on the AR though, I tried switching Arianna back when she was super constipated but it also made her a lot fussier.

Thanks for all the replies, i found a way to make the teats not block up, i am already on number 2 teats and they would still get blocked so i tried premaking the formula with boiling water and putting them in a bowl of cold water then refridgerating them. I then heat them up as i need them
