Me & OH have our family car. But as it stands we just can't afford to insure me on it. The cheapest option we have is just buying me a little banger to potter about in as he's been told his going to need an op on his back meaning of course he won't be able to drive.. But what cars qualify as a "banger". Just something small.

Any ideas???

I could name 100 cars but the best thing for you to do is go on Parkers.co.uk
Choose the make and the model of the car, search and it will give you all the facts and figures e.g Road tax band,MPG,insurance groupand how much they go for new/second hand :D

You might be better with a diesel as they do more mpg :Dxx

We have an old shape Micra (M reg). It cost us £700 but its an auto. My insurance is the cheapest I could get (£75 a month and I passed 6 weeks ago and am 22) and it does about 45-50mpg (autos do a little less than manuals too). It is a small car but we use it as our family car (yes, currently we are that poor  ) and we get by fine (have to take pushchair out to do a weeks shopping tho  ) and I love it!

Fiesta, micra, punto, corsa, ka - all below 1.3 engine are generally cheap to insure, cheap to repair etc etc. :)

You seem to be able to pick up old KA's realy cheap these days and whats good about them is the model shape only changed like last year or something so older ones dont actually look old if you know what i mean lol

tbh i wouldnt recommend buying, insuring and maintaining any car as a cheaper option  unless your insurer is looking for upwards of £1500 then it would still be cheaper to go on the car you already have

saying that dh bought a v reg corsa a few years back for £1300 and it costs us next to nothing and has done since the day we got it, its been minimal on maintenence and repairs, tax is only about £125 a year and its £11 a month to insure :)

mine on the other hand is extortionate in every way lol

Yeah the car we have now the insurer is asking for £1643.28 per year so it works out cheaper for me to buy a little banger for say no more than £500. OH is a trained mechanic so anything that needs doing he will do and one car I looked at is asking only £294 a year. Which still isn't brilliant but works out about £24/25 a month.

Id say a ford Ka .. the old ones still look quite new its cheap to run and insure.

omg 1600 insurance thats more than mine and i have public liability taxi insurance

good move having a mechanic as on oh though, i wish i did lol

Have a look on freecycle. My friend got an old fiesta on there for free, nothing at all wrong with it and only 10,000 miles on the clock and taxed and MOTed for a year. She even found £20 in the glovebox ;)

I used to have a Fiat Cinquecento & a Seicento - I'd def recommend them, they are small but really cheap to run/tax/mot/insure.

I cant understand how it is dearer for you to be a named driver? You're suggesting you buy a car, tax it, MOT it, running costs and insure in your name only all seperalty and this is cheaper??

Have you had a chat with the insurers and asked for a quote to add you as aname driver??
