Chelsie’s labor story began on Sunday March 1st. I had woken up a little earlier than usual due to odd stomach pains. The top side of my belly seemed really tender to the touch and when I would roll over, it would pull uncomfortably. A few hours later I lost a few small bits of my mucus plug. I was excited, but assumed I still had a ways to go still. All day long I continued to lose pieces of my plug. At the time, I thought nothing of it, but all day long, I kept complaining to DH how incredibly uncomfortable I was. The dog was stuck to me like glue, wherever I was, he was there too, usually just lying next to me. I woke up that night around 12:30am due to extreme discomfort. Within about an hour of being up, I realized I was having contractions and began to time them. They ranged between 5 and 12 minutes with no clear pattern starting. I called L&D in the morning and was told to try a warm shower and a nap and see what happened. The shower helped with the back pain I was having and then I began to finish packing the hospital bag, just in case. Around the time I finished with the bag, I noticed the contractions had spread out even more. I ate lunch and decided to take a nap. I had several contractions during my nap, but by the time I was fully awake again, it seemed that everything had stopped. I was so disappointed. I spent the remainder of the day grumpy and uncomfortable. That night I again woke up with contractions, around 1:00am. I let DH sleep and began timing contractions. This time they were very consistent in time, but started out around 8 mins apart. Around 5:30 I woke up DH to let him know what was going on. Originally he wasn’t going to go to work, but we both decided he may as well since he could be home in a matter of minutes if necessary and we both figured everything would fizzle out as it had the day before. I continued having contractions all morning and again called over to L&D. They advised resting and seeing if things stayed the same and that I could come in to get checked whenever I wanted. I decided to stay at home as long as possible. By 4:00 in the afternoon, I was so exhausted from almost no sleep in 2 days and I wasn’t able to talk through the contractions. We decided to head to the hospital and get checked, that way if we were sent home, it wouldn’t be in the middle of the night. We arrived at OB at 4:45 and I was checked only to find out I was 2-3 cm and about 50% effaced, however, my blood pressure was really high, so they decided to do a urine test for protein. The results came back positive, indicating pre-e. The Dr didn’t really want to send me home but wanted to make sure I was progressing timely, so they gave me an hour and checked again. At that point I was 3cm and 70% effaced, so they officially admitted me and said I wouldn’t be leaving without a baby, I was so excited. The contractions were really wearing on me, so we decided to use the whirlpool; it felt amazing. I was worried that I may have slowed down labor with the warm water as I only had 4 strong contractions in the entire hour I was in the tub. We went back to the room and I decided to try to rest and DH left to go let the dog out (hospital was 30 mins from home and we’d be gone for 8 hrs at this point) I rested for about 15 mins and then the contractions picked up and I became very nauseous. The nurse sat with me and I decided I needed to get some pain relief as I was going on the third night of almost no sleep. By the time DH returned I was just about to get some IV pain meds. He was shocked at how much of a difference I was in by the time he had gotten back. The pain med was wonderful and although I still felt the contractions, I was able to rest awhile between them. We both were resting/sleeping and it was about half an hour after I received the pain med that I had an awful and long contraction. I was so scared the medicine was wearing off already! Then suddenly, I felt a pop and then a gush. It took a minute to realize my water broke, but I woke up DH and told him to get the nurse. Sure enough, as soon as my water broke, my contractions were beyond intense. I think I made it 15 minutes before requesting the epidural, I was at 5 cm at this point. The epidural was wonderful and even though I don’t tolerate pain well, apparently I tolerate pain meds very well, as they only gave me a half dose because it was already making me so numb. We waited about 3 hours before checking again and I was complete!! I couldn’t believe it! It was about 6:30am at this point. We decided to turn down the epidural and “labor down” for a bit while it wore off so I would feel the contractions better to help with pushing. By the time I could feel enough and the medical team was ready, it was nearly 9am. I pushed for about an hour and it was the worst pain I’d ever felt. I even asked DH at one point if he would ‘tag in’ cause I didn’t want to do it anymore. They kept telling me baby is almost here, almost here. Finally the Dr. said keep pushing don’t stop you’re about to meet your baby and then she was finally here! Chelsie Lynn was born on March 4th, 2015, at 9:54am, at 8lbs 6 oz and 20 inches long. The poor thing had a lot of swelling and bruising but she still looked perfect to me. I had a 2nd degree tear, but really didn’t care at that point, I finally had my baby in my arms. Overall I figured I was in actual labor for 33 hours and about 13 hours of pre-labor.
