I've been obsessed with chewing on sponges for more or less the entire of the 3rd tri. I've heard this is sometimes a craving in pregnancy, anyone else have it to make me feel less wierd?

I buy sponges just for chewing, and since you can't really wash them they must be awful disgusting...but...oh so good. I can do it for hours, think one will be coming to hospital with me.

lol no i dont chew sponges but i do have to stop myself from taking a bite of my dove cream bar soap everytime i use it!! its only recently its started happening but i just want to lick it haha! xx

Hahahaha! I really like a whiff or de-icer or petrol too...know that's bad though, and i've not trying to eat it at least.

I'm through my second sponge, not sure if this one will last much longer. Takes a while before the chemical taste goes and they take on...whatever flavour it is that I like so much (think I'd rather not know).

Sorry I know I am not even near my 3rd trimester but I thought I would just check out all the different areas since I am new. I opened this thread because of the title.

Have you mentioned your urge to bite soap to your doctor? It can be a sign of low iron. I know that sounds weird but it's true.

I have no idea if chewing on a sponge means the same thing or not. I do know when you have low iron people sometimes get the urge to eat soap or clay.
I just wanted to mention this so you could bring it up with your doctor.

I've had strange cravings:

Ice
The smell of paper
The smell of sharpies
The smell of a Hoover, you know the smell of the air that blows out of the back mmmm!!

Haha it's great being in college and working in an office with these cravings! Especially when the cleaner comes in while I'm at work!

Oh and I have low iron!

Ice is mine - bloody ridiculous considering there is a foot of snow outside but as soon as I can get my car out I am off to buy something that will enable me to have crushed ice on tap. Obsessed with the stuff. :haha:

I posted this when i was in the 2nd trimester everyone thought it was hilarious! I have had the craving for chewing on a wet flannel and its got worse since i got in the 3rd trimester. Theres nothing better that i love then getting in a nice bubble bath and chewing on my flannel i think about it quite a lot lol
I also like smelling clean fresh washing and crunching ice! My iron is low, i am taking liquid iron for this. Strange what pregnancy does to us isnt it? :flower:

Not in pregnancy (yet ) but I remember I liked chewing on sponges as a kid in the bath.

Yes, I think it may stem from a childhood memory? I did chew in the bath :haha:

I do like crunching ice too, but can't do it for toooo long cause it's too cold!

I have mentioned it to the doctor but they didn't think anything of it. But then again I've had sooo many blood tests i'm sure someone would've noticed low iron. I have heard that sponge-chewing can be a sign of anemia, but again, no one is bothered.

lol........I had this same craving when I was pregnant 15years ago with my first.....new sponges werent the same they had to have had soap on them so that they had a faint soapy smell.............Im now going to admit to something I never have before......I actually ate my ex husbands bath sponge :shrug:...dont know why I did it just felt I had too, I had a craving for the smell of pvc too.....my mums partner is a fireman and I went up the firestation one day and they couldnt get me home as I loved the smell of their wellyboots and macs in the station!!!!! and the hoses! My next pregnancy I had a craving for coal tar soap.....luckily I managed to avoid actually eating it but used to sniff a bar to get myself off to sleep..........still waiting for what it will be this time???!

Glad it's not just me! This time all I'm craving is fizzy vimto but with my 2nd and all I wanted was a sponge full of water to suck on. I spent ages in the shower just sucking and had my own special sponge just for the task. Yummy! x

hehe ive been craving ice cubes but only if it comes with robinsons orange squash -_-

I like hair..think I might have to have it all cut off!!

I even try to have a go on OH hair but he shouts at me :( lol!!

I love chewin on sponges covered with dove soap! No other soap will do and I constantly chew my razors handle... Mmmm rubbery on one side and hard on the other. I could easily spend over half an hour in the shower with these two objects in my mouth and dove soap in my hand! I wasn't like this till I got to 7 months!!!

this is really making me giggle!!! I loved chewing my sponge or flannel and sucking the bath water out of it when i was pregnant with my 1st!! bringing back memories lolololol :)

Ooh how could I forget I also used to eat the soil out of my houseplants, I loved the crunch in my teeth and the gritty taste and I was mad on gardening in the summer as I wanted to 'be with the dirt' all the time. I ended up on tablets or vitamins to help control it but it didnt go until I gave birth......dirt is goooood!!!!

I crave sponges full of radox bubble bath! before i go to bed i have to soak a sponge in it overnight then in the morning chew on it and sniff it! its really weird i ran out of radox the other day and started crying until my fiance went out and got me some more haha!
