Child support: Does he owe her? (Canada)

Hello! I just have a quick question about child support. My child's father and I were together for a few months, slept together once then he left me. I found out I was pregnant afterwards. He blocked me from everything. I had no way to contact him. Eventually he unblocked me from Facebook and I updated him on her progress. He didn't care. We never lived together, weren't together during the pregnancy, he didn't want the pregnancy, and he didn't want to be on the birth certificate. About a month after she was born he decided he wanted to be involved, a little while after we sent in the paternity test. He's been involved since and sees her most weekends although I am always there due to her still breastfeeding (she just turned one). I'm just wondering if he owes the first year of child support as we don't have an order in place. He wants to just but whatever she needs when she needs it and I drive down and pick it up then drive back home (that's about two hours!). If I were to get an order does he only owe anything after the order is placed? Thank you.

You can file for retroactive child support. It isn't an absolute here in Canada, but generally they base it upon length of time, reason for not asking prior, circumstances, etc. Seeing as though you are a single mom with two small ones and it has only been about a year (this is your youngest, right?) then it is very likely you will receive the request.

Best thing I suggest is to talk to your local Child Support Enforcement office (or your equivalent). They would be able to answer your questions for you, or get answers for you.
