Childbirths using pain alternatives to epidurals, how did they work?

I used G & A with DS and I am planning to do so again. It didn't really help with the pain as such but it made me feel oddly removed from myself (like I was drunk) so although I could feel the pain it didn't feel like it was happening to me. I know that sounds totally weird but it's the only way to explain it.

DS was back to back and the MW ended up giving me Pethidine as well even though I didn't ask for it. I think I was too wrapped up in labour at that point and barely noticed the difference once it had kicked in.

They took my G&A away for the pushing because she said it was distracting me but by that stage the adrenaline (probably some of the pethidine as well) had kicked in.

All in all it was still painful but I know I can manage on it again. Once I got over the initial sickness feeling of the G&A it was great. I was so away with it I kept randomly talking about stuff to DH like I was drunk.
