Hello. I am 42 and TTCing after several miscarriages and someone suggested Chinese herbs with accupuncture and claims there is a lot of success with it. You are supposed to do it for 6 months before TTCing and you must see a specialist.

Has anyone heard anything about this? Any success stories that you know of?

I was in the emergency room last Wednesday after taking Black cohash for 1/2 a week. The doc looked it up as it was the only thing different in my diet and he said that Black cohash AND dong quai have contraindications with pregnancy and have a small amount of cancer causing compounds. Black cohash has a moderate risk of liver damage and dong quai (angelica) causes uterin contractions (impeding implantation /causing m/c AND interacts with too many other drugs to be beneficial to you for ttc:
warfarin (Coumadin);
aspirin;
a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) including ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, others), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, others), ketoprofen (Orudis KT, Orudis), indomethacin (Indocin), etodolac (Lodine), nabumetone (Relafen), oxaprozin (Daypro), piroxicam (Feldene), sulindac (Clinoril), tolmetin (Tolectin), and others;
ardeparin (Normiflo);
dalteparin (Fragmin);
danaparoid (Orgaran);
enoxaparin (Lovenox);
heparin; or
other herbs, antioxidants, or health supplements (these may affect blood clotting).

Is it worth it? I think Vitex has much better reviews along with many more success studies. I'd sooner use science to my advantage with TTC than chinese hearsay herbs.

I have been taking ginseng and herb tea (tastes horrible) that Chinese doctor made me. before O! I really cant say whether this had any effect, no BFP yet though

I have been going to see a doctor of Chinese medicine....I have weekly acupuncture sessions and drink a prescription of Chinese herbs specially formulated for me....I'm feeling positive about it. I'm not sure about the 6 month thing you mention....each case is different I would imagine. I'm sorry about your losses x

I'm almost 38 and I have been doing acupuncture and herbs for 2 months for help in TTC #2. After having dd 16 months ago, I had been experiencing some extremely short and scanty periods with dark blood and clots, and I hadn't been able to get a BFP.

After acu and herbs, my periods have greatly improved and acu is great for stress relief. It's kind of tough to be patient when you don't feel like you have time on your side, but you really do have to give it time to work.

If you're going this route I'd really suggest you get them prescribed by someone trained in TCM. It's really not something you're going to be able to do yourself. My acu gives me different formulations based on my tongue diagnosis and my symptoms and changes them up for different parts of my cycle.

I take Jia Wei Xiao Yao San 3 times a day everyday before O and I swear to God it has taken the clots away and the edge off the pain of my period. I also take it the last few days before my period if I'm sure I'm not pregnant to get the added effects right before the witch gets me. It was prescribed for endometriosis.
