I really like the idea of cloth nappies but I have no idea where to start.

I read through the "Mum who uses cloth nappies" weekly topic and I'm still a bit unsure.

I think I'd like to use the pockets type, but if I used disposable liners, wouldn't this just make it the same as using a disposable nappy?
I don't like the idea of the All in ones as my husband and I have helpers due to our disability and I would feel really bad having to ask someone to wash a soiled nappy... but if I used disposable liners would it make it a bit better or not?

Sorry I'm really clueless, I've spent the evening reading up on this and I still don't fully understand.

Also, does anyone know where the best place to buy them is, preferably online (I'm in the UK)

Thanks so much, hopefully you can help me understand :) I never thought something as simple as nappies could confuse me so much lol!

I personally don't like disposable liners...for the reason you mentioned, it's pretty much like wearing sposies...it's putting the paper against their skin, instead of the soft cloth diaper I spent lots on lol. I don't know about your disabilities, are you able to clean the diapers? Or would it be fully on your helpers? If you can they just help you out, I would just have them put them in a bag, maybe if they don't mind dumping the solids into the toilet but you can do the rest? Or even you do all of that? I know people that have their kids in daycare and they just have the daycare worker put the entire soiled diaper into a wetbag and they deal with it when they get home

I was going to suggest a nappy laundering service but Derby council says there aren't any there. They do offer a £25 cash incentive for you to use real nappies though.

I've read that some people just use a disposable liner when they know their baby is going to poo, and go without when they don't think they will. I'm not sure how reliable that would be though.

I've bought two types of paper liners and they feel quite different to each other. The mothercare smart nappy liners feel very papery and a bit crunchy, so I'm not sure how nice they'll be next to baby's bum. I got a trial kit from my local real nappy network and the liners in there are much nicer. They're called Junior Joy Enviro Nappy Liners and they feel quite nice and soft to me, so it might be worth shopping around if you go down the disposable liner route.

I can usually tell when Freya is going to poo so I use a liner for that and then I don't use one for the next nappy after she has done a poo and so on. I use One Life liners, they are really soft and you can just chuck the whole thing down the toilet, it is biodegradable. I then put all my wet nappies into a mesh bag in my bucket which goes straight into the washing machine so you don't have to touch the nappies again. Which is prob a good idea if you have someone helping you!

I dont use liners because they are too papery. I use pockets without liners. What you could do to save your helpers from the horrors of poo is buy a mesh bag to put inside a nappy pail so all the nappys go inside the bag and then when it comes to washing time you just take the bag out of the pail and put it in the washing machine so they dont have to touch any poos. You could also line the nappy pail with either a wet bag that can be washed or a bin liner that can be chucked out.

I use liners mainly because my daughters poop is a (TMI warning) funny gloopy stage, she's breastfed and on 3 solid meals a day so her poos quite soft. With the liners then i can just grab the corners of the liner and flush down the toilet. On occasion poop will go on the nappy still but the liner does take most of it.

There are a few online sites that sell nappies but i've only ever used www.thenappylady.co.uk and ebay.
