So I had my 2nd FS appointment today and saw a registrar who said all our tests were clear and diagnosed us with unexplained fertility. He then said to keep trying and once we reach 3 years they will put us on the IVF list. Apparently they have stopped doing IUIs and don't give fertility drugs unless you have problems ovulating.

He was very unconcerned, didn't want to explain our tests properly and I stormed out crying. When I got to the car park I decided I wasn't satisfied with his answer and went back and asked to see the consultant. The consultant was lovely, explained all the tests, why they don't offer other treatment and is going to do a lap to make sure there is no scar tissue from the cyst removal I had earlier in the year.

So two things really - one, always ask for a 2nd opinion and two, what do I do now? I really can't carry on for another 18 months hoping we get pregnant but I don't want to skip straight to IVF as we can't really afford it and might not need it.

Seriously??? The way the lists work where I am is they put you on the list as soon as you're referred. Then they do any necessary investigation. After my first specialist appointment at NHS hospital they said all that was left was to check my tubes. SO I had my lap yesterday. A small amount endo was found and removed and my right tube is totally blocked. I have my second NHS appointment next week so will see what they say, as they may now not give me IUI due to the blocked tube. We only get 2 shots of IVF, luckily I have been doing Napro as well and I have every faith that it will be a Napro baby we have. Being on the waiting lists is my back up, just in case. But I'm sure we'll have our baby by then.

If are you from the uk it's normal. If your infertility is unexplained, they generally won't do anything until you have been trying for three years.

It's tough, but you do get through it. I've almost reached my three years (more tha nthree years actually, because they take it from my m/c).

I am unexplained and was given clomid, my PCT does not do IUI either, I am expecting a similar response when i have my next appointment in Jan.... :-( I am looking at other options such as napro and egg sharing.

Thanks, I'm feeling a bit calmer today but it's tough to know that we won't be getting any help. Unfortunately it makes me question whether all the annoying comments of 'relax' and 'be positive' are true and it's all in my head. And I hate that. I just feel a bit lost and no idea really what to do next.

that is bull crap. Its things like this that make me grateful to live in the US. We may have to pay for everything if our insurance doesnt cover it, but the doctors work for us not the government. If we want IUI or IVF we get it, as long as we can pay for it we pretty much can take our treatment as far as we want. It would be nice to not have to pay but I would really hate the waiting game.

Tbh, I'd say that we in the uk are luckier than in the US. If you to want get treated quickly, you can pay and go privately. If you are willing to wait and jump through some fairly strict hoops, then you can be treated free on the NHS. It isn't a perfect system, but it could be worse.

Hi there
I don't think you should put up with that. Have you heard of NaProTechnology? (Cooch mentioned it too) It is a cheaper treatment form and it actually has higher succes rates than IVF PLUS only very very few couples who go through NaPro end up with the label "unexplained" although they often have it when they arrive at NaPro. This has to do with the fact that NaPro is much more specialized in diagnosing the patient. They are a lot more interested in diagnosing and treatning the underlying problem whereas IVF only bypasses the problem, is really really expensive, unhealthy and invasive. Also NaPro doctors would never turn you away and tell you to come back in several months. It should be your decision when to start treatment and in many cases what causes our infertility only gets worse with time so time should really not be wasted.
here is a little film you can watch if you want to know more about NaProTechnology:

Best wishes,

I think where ever you live if you have the money you can have the treatment you want....

very hard for those of us that can't afford it though :nope:

Have a read of my success story (in success stories thread-trying for 9 years, 3x ivf's failed then fell naturally)

I was losing hope after 9 years when, after reading hundreds of ivf forums for answers, advice etc I learned London consultants were giving their patients low dose coated aspirin 75mg, to aid implantation. I also learned sasmar lube aids sperm to get to their target and helps fertilise eggs and makes your mucus a more friendly place. I thought it was worth a shot, I'd tried everything and low and behold 2 months later conceived my little boy naturally:happydance: and my consultant advised me to stay on low dose aspirin till 36 weeks to ensure good blood flow to the baby as some people fail to fall pregnant or lose their babies due to blood clots etc.

PLEASE CONSULT YOUR DOC IF YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL PROBLEMS OR ARE ON ANY MEDICATION!!

I wish you well for the future:flower:

it really is very difficult we were in the same siuation unexplained and after 2 years of trying we were told that we could be added to the IVF waiting list after 3 yaers of trying but then the waiting list would be 3 years!!!. We were in a situation where we could pay to g privatley but amazingly we idint have to. After 2 1/2 years trying I got pregnnat naturally the month borefore we were due to start IVF and iam now 25 weeks pregnant. I never ever thought it would happen and the whole trying to get pregnant took over my life it was all I could think about as times it really is hard but things may still happen for you naturally and I really hope they do.

Thanks for sharing, I love to hear success stories.

I feel lucky that we do have more choices in the UK but frustrated that there are so many rules but who they will and won't help. I am looking into doing some IUIs early next year as I don't want to jump straight to the expense or stress of IVF.
