Hi everyone.

I had a 18 week ultrasound a couple of days ago and found out im having a perfect little boy but looking at the ultrasound photos im a little concerned his nose looks too large?

Can anyone share their thoughts on this, should I not worry or is it something i should ask my doctor about?

LOL I don't see any issues there. There is a nasal bone present which is great and it looks normal sized. Perhaps he'll just have a big snoz? (I hope that's not too insensitive). Does your family tend to have large noses?
Medically speaking, though, in my opinion it's fine (I'm a senior med student). Feel free to ask your doc if it'll make you feel better though.

He has quite a round tummy on him too :p How cute!!!!

I think even clear ultrasound pics show a distorted view of what baby will actually look like, especially while they are still developing.

My brothers nose was like 1/2 his face when he was born and my dad used to joke that my mom had an affair with mr. Magoo. My brother doesn't have a big nose now so I don't know why he did as a baby, and he's very handsome. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks guys :) none of us have big noses but i looked at some friends ultrasound photos and their babies have tiny little button noses! Maybe it'll look different once hes born. Hehe the belly is cute, the lady said they normally look really skinny at this stage but my bubba boy is a bit chubby already! <3

I agree with the pp-the ultrasound pics will have a bit of fuzz to them, a blur of sorts, so you may think something is larger because of the blur.

It does look a touch long. But I'm sure he will e adorable and Hansom! :)

Oh my gosh, he looks adorable!

I noticed with my scan that I had done last week (17 weeks) that my boy looks like his nose is much fleshier than the rest of him. Maybe the nose develops earlier than the rest and so looks bigger.

It looks kinda cute :) and don't worry I don't think ultrasound images are a perfect image of baby.

My sisters baby's lips looked huge and when he was born they were cute and small :)
Your baby looks cute to me!

My baby girls nose looks massive in the picture at 16 weeks! Quite skinny and the longest legs you've ever seen lol. Mind you I'm 5'7 and my husband is 6'7 so she wasn't never going to be short. Dont forget they are only just starting to lay down the fat stores so everything looks a bit out of proportion, once their face fills out everything will look perfectly normal.......If not we'll have to set them up in a date lol. Xxxx

i have the same concerns about my ultrasound, but like everyone has told you, even the clearest can have a distorted image of baby.
a nasal bone is present which is def a good sign!

That is a very cute picture!

Ultrasound pictures often have exaggerated features because it is more of an impression than an actual image, so sometimes the baby can move and you get two shots of the same feature. Sometimes it's just because the baby is still developing.

Here is an example. Check out the nose on this ultrasound!! (This is my youngest son at 20 weeks gestation, 6 days and 22 months). He does have a big nose but nothing abnormal and it fits his face (well I think so anyway) I hope this puts your mind at rest.

I remember having a scan at 37 weeks with my 2nd daughter and was horrified to see she looked like she had a GINORMOUS chin - think wizard of the oz witxh x 10. She was born 2 days later and no her chin was normal.

In my last pregnancy I had the normal NHS scan at 12 weeks ad 2 days later had a private scan - the difference in the image was amazing a lot clearer - I think your baby will have a lovely nose

I have a very scary scan picture of my son lol and he came out gorgeous so don't worry x

remember a 2-D scan is a 'slice' of baby, not a photo ... so they only need to be turned slightly and you get a very distorted view of how big things are relative to each other.

When we see a 2-D sideways shot, we assume it's an exact profile shot ... but the chances are it isn't.
If your baby's head is turned even a fraction either way, the face shot you will get is going to be a little distorted.

In any case, baby's nose doesn't look exceptionally big to me (I was expecting Pinocchio from your description!) but if you are worried, arrange yourself a private 3-D scan. This will give you much more of an idea

He looks perfect to me! I had the same concerns with my little girl. On one picture her nose looked huge but it happened to be her hand the side of her face (picking her nose maybe, lol) and on the 20 week scan I had recently her lips looked quite big when the sonographer zoomed in to check her lips for a cleft pallette and her nose only looked small, but on the pictures I had her nose looked big again and a long skinny neck, lol  I wouldnt worry about it,those 2d black and white pics do make the baby look a bit strange and sometimes distorted, but I'm sure he will be just perfect! :hugs: x

On my 17 week scan pictures (got loads on a DVD) my babys nose looks massive in some.. I mean like, bigger than in the scan picture you posted! and then in others it looks like a cute small tiny button nose so i really think it just depends on the angle of the baby. I dont think its very indicative of what baby will look like when he is born.

Having said that my dad has a huge nose and me and my brothers have quite big noses that we got from him so i wont be suprised if my baby does infact have a large nose! Not that i mind at all.. it will just be a family trait <3
