Okay, my little girl is a month old and we have been using those ready to feed SMA Gold 1 litre cartons you can buy and they have been great, but now she is feeding like 6oz and plus any milk she doesn't drink being thrown out it is becoming very expensive so we have bought the tub of powder.
I have been reading on the internet and on this site for a good hour now on the best way to make up the feeds, and it's all confusing me. Firstly, they say the best way and safest way is to make up the feed fresh, which means you have to boil the kettle, leave to cool for 30mins, put in bottle, add powder, cool bottle in cold water. - My baby will NOT be happy waiting this long???!!! She REALLY cries when wanting a feed.

How do you all do it? I read on a few sites some people make the bottles up with the boiled water for the day and leave on the side and just add powder when bubs wants a feed - but other people are saying this will not kill the bacteria in the powder or mix the powder well as the water is room temp?
Also some sites saying that you should not give powder form to babies under 2 months because they cannot digest the bacteria in the powder? What the hell? So why does the tub say from birth onwards then? I swear people are becoming obsessed with bacteria. I want a quick and safe way to make up the feeds? Lol...

confused.com!!!!!!!!

since i no how long he has between feed ish i start to make a bottle a little while before he wants it so its cooled and everything but i never wait for the water to cool before making the bottle i use it straight away then cool in cold water

Or as soon as he crys boil the kettle make the bottle leave it to sit under cold running tap till cool enough while keeping baby happy

I sterilise my bottles and add cooled boiled water....i do this in the evening in prep for the next day.
I add the formula when Jac is ready for his feed and give it to him room temp.
I've never had a problem with this and Jac is ok.

For me the most important thing is that the waters boiled and cooled as we've had incidents of local water supplies being contaminated and having to boil water for absolutelly everything for all of us!

Do what you think is best for you and your LO hun.

As above,i make up 4 in the morning(for the day) and 4 in the evening(night feeds+early morning) just with boiled water and just add the powder when Connah needs a feed.

HV actually walked into my kitchen to see how i was making feeds and had a go at me for doing it this way and said every bottle should be made up fresh but as u say,u cant expect babies to wait...Connah would be a nightmare if i did this!

My mum did it this way with me & and 3 other children and neither me nor her have had any problems =) x

Thanks everyone! Is the powder the same as the liquid btw? Have read the powder has played some babies up and the liquid is more fatty.

i make up 3 bottles at a time, which is how many he has in 12 hours (he has colief in them) andstore them in the fridge til i need them, then warm in a jug of boiled water-this is the way i have always done it with my other 5 kids and they are all perfectly fit, healthy and happy

It is true that in order to destroy the bacteria that can be present in the powder, you need to make bottles up with water that is over 70 degrees. From what I understand there has been extremely few cases of babies getting ill from bacteria in the powder, but the risk is still there :( I can see this would be extremely hard for those who demand feed though.

I make up 4 a day and hot water warm them as needed
if out use fisher price flask with hot water in and make it 5mins before due.

adding powder to room temp has always left it bitty for me ;/

I have twins so i go through 2-3 kettles a day,but i just boil water and use that until it runs out and i just warm it up when i need to make up bottles.
I always make up feeds as i need them, but because i don't sterilise anything no point in boiling water every time either.

we have always done it like this - every night we sterilise and add boiling water to her bottles for the next day, then when she wants one i just add the powder and heat for her - she's always been great this way and i find it really easy :)

i make up bottles night before 5 bottles of 7oz let the water cool...when he needs feeding i take out two ounces and boil kettle and add the two ounces back in so it's warm for him as he prefers it warm..if it's hot i don't botrher though..

and when he's used a few in the day i make them back up and put them towards the back..

never leave them longer than 24 hours though.

I just make the bottles up at the start of the day using boiling water.. leave them on the side and just add the powder as needed and give it her at room temp.

I could not be dealing with the warming or cooling bottles ect! When she wants a bottle, she wants it straight away!

Maybe i do this wrong but its something we've always done...

We put fresh water in the kettle & boil - after cooling down a bit i put in bottle & add powder - and leave to cool. (I usually only do about 2/3 bottles at a time)

When cool i put in fridge and use when needed.

Olivia's been fine but i'd check with midwife if your never sure hun x
