Is this a common problem with FF babies? Alex got bunged up after jsut 3 bottles in a day and it stopped him feeding for 14 hours.

What can i do to help prevent it?

We never had that problem with Hannah on her formula. Maybe try one with less or no iron? Some people give an extra ounce of water, and a few I think use watered down orange juice but I'm really not sure what ages that's suitable from as we never had to do it. Oh and gripe water I think can help

I just used to give Brooke a little drink of water inbetween feeds.

Someone suggested a drop of brown sugar in the water but we never got so far as to needing that as plain water did the trick

Alex is really bad for it , he goes up to 4 days.

we give him extra water
2.5ml orange or prune juice in 10ml water
baby massage

and have just found out infacol can cause constipation so we stopped that

Oscar hasnt had it yet :touch wood: but its probably the fact that its foreign for Alex, 14 hours seems a long time (unless its through the night of course ) ive never heard of constipation stopping them feeding that quickly before, but i'm not an expert, water is meant to help and i'm told baby massage too, hope he feels better soon xx

Sometimes Violet will not go for a few days and then have one massive explosion...

We found that massaging her stomach regulary throughout the day really helps and because the heat has picked up, we've been offering her a couple of ounces of water every day which probably helps.

It's never stopped her feeding tho, only makes her whingy!

add a pinch of brown sugar to cooled water, this usually shifts the 'blockage' x

Sure I told you this ...one dose of gripe water a day always helped my Caitlin with wind and number 2's! You can have more a day but we always gave her one to help and more if we felt she needed it. x

when Ernie was on sma he was terribly constipated, but since we switched to the aptamil 2 he has been fine.

Sma contains more iron, and we all know that when you take iron tablets they can make you constipated!

I give Archie water in between feeds and take him to baby massage. He poos every third day which according to the dr, is normal. After reading infacol causes constipation, I will be changing to gripe water. Thanks for that!

when we switched luisa from breast milk to formula she was constipated..

we switched from aptimal to cow and gate and it eased..

we then gave her boiled water with a small amount of brown sugar and it went completly..

lol this is exactly the same for Dominic, he goes about 2 days without (he's not constipated tho, altho he was on sma gold which is why we changed to Aptimel) then has a huge explosion! But we give water inbetween feeds too

We spoke to the health visitor today about this. Oliver seems to have major pain if he doesn't go every day. We had been told a couple of weeks ago to put an extra ounce of water in two feeds a day, as for his age he should only have 2oz of water a day. Today she suggested trying 1oz of freshly squeezed orange juice to 6oz of water or a small amount of brown sugar to water. He is on Infacol so hearing on here it can cause constipation I will cut this down and try and stop it totally. You can also try massaging clockwise and then down their stomaches, we have been trying this today. Hope this helps, take care :hugs: XX

Effy is has this she is only a week old but an 1oz of water seems 2 do the trick at the mo.

Morgans on lactalose to soften his poo bless him it horrible seein them strain. Cooled boiled water is great when they are little though x

It may take a couple weeks for him to get used to formula. It has alot more calories and is iron fortified, the iron is actually what can cause constipation. I never had any problems with Jasmine and constipation, but I used a lower iron formula because of her reflux.

Make sure your making the formula right by adding the water into the bottle before you add the powder, I always was very generous with the water.. I used to use concentrated formula when Jasmine was younger. Once she drank less I used the powder. I found that the ready to feed stuff DID constipate her.

That makes sense, the last time it happened he had 3 cartons of ready made stuff in one day. Since weve been on the powder mix there hasnt been any problems.

OMG !!

I think i might of found out why alex is constipated then!!! all i do is use the cartons.

ya... there must be something in the ready made stuff that constipates them... maybe some kind of preservative or whatever.
