Anyone doing this?

What are you thoughts on this? Just wondering.

I am considering having mine collected for donation... Unfortunatly, as far as I know at this time they won't accept the cord blood if it's from a home birth but I may get the kit anyways just in case I end up requiring transfer to hospital.

Its a difficult one... I am a leukemia/bone marrow transplant nurse and we use cords for transplant all the time so I looked into it with Euan. I thought about having it stored just incase but its expensive... i asked the Canadian companies that were available about quality assurance issues in terms of power cuts and stuff will the cord still be viable and they could not answer the questions that I had so I never bothered.

This time around I am going to look into donation as it can really save someone's life. Although i am planning on a homebirth too so if what kandykinz says is true then thats ashame but i will most definitely look into it.

My husband and I are pretty sure we are going to do it. Cost is a little high but have found a place to store it that will give a military discount. We are doing the cord blood only.

My local hosp do research on cord blood/cords so they can have mine freely. It will only go in the bin otherwise (I worked in pathology and they do get chucked out)

Well, I was going to store it then I saw the price. There's no way we can afford that and my insurance doesn't cover it.

i havent asked about it yet but i would gladly donate, would rather it went to good use than get chucked out tbh x

We didn't do either, I would have loved to but our hospital doesn't take either.

looked into it and the Alberta Cord Blood Bank (here in Canada) will not take donated cord blood if it was a homebirth :( or if it is a c-section, or for a million other reasons... But it makes sense why they are so picky so I'm not gonna complain.

I'm sure we can't afford to have it stored on a "what if"...but if I can donate it, I would consider. My birth is planned for an independent birth suite, but still legally considered a home birth, so I'm not sure whether they will accept donations here in the US. I'll ask my mw about it when I see her next week.

I didn't know what an Independent Birth Suite was until now. The pictures I saw online (LOVE GOOGLE) seems so nice. I am jealous. :)

Thanks, I'm soooo excited! I wish this had been available to me when I had my other 2.

I would if it didn't cost so damn much! :nope: I would definately consider donating it if it were just going to waste anyway, I've read plenty of stories of peoples lives being saved by getting cord blood etc.

I am going to do it through our nhs hospital for other peoples use - I was going to last time but as baby was prem it didn't happen. I think its something I would not store and so would be wasted. Having had a very ill child myself - if anyone or anything could have saved him I would have done anything for that. It would be amazing if something that would just get binned could be that magic medicine for a baby/child.

I think it is something that they should offer more - where you can donate your cord blood on the NHS - It definitely didn't happen when I had ds1.

It like one of those situations - we would all take it if our child needed it.... but only by people donating it can it be there for us to take!

Just curious--to bank cord blood, does this mean you have to clamp the cord immediately? We are planning to leave the cord until it stops pulsing before clamping/cutting it.

How do you find out if your hospital do this? I'd like to donate mine but not sure how to go about it xx

Have just checked online and there isn't a hospital anywhere near me that does this. Such a shame, if only more places had staff who could precess it xx
