Do any of you care to share the cost for your hospital bill?
It makes me nervous enough that I have to consider cesarian (sp?), but then they go and label it "surgery" which I assume means they strap another billion dollars to your bill for.

We are planning our first child and we're very concerned about the general costs and the costs of delivery hit me today like a punch in the stomach, I have NO IDEA what this bill might look like... thousands? tens of thousands?

I'm in the USA by the way, that will probably make a difference.

Thank you so very much for giving me an idea on this!!

I'm not sure on this one I'm afraid as I'm in the UK.

Could I ask how come you have to consider a c section? :flower:

The hospital bill for me - not including care for my daughter or doctors fees was around $12,000 - but it was covered and I did not have to pay anything.

Do you have insurance? My insurance has a $500 deductible and then I'm responsible for 25% of the rest up to $4000

But general costs for a c/s

my doctor charges $3200
Anesthesiologist $1800 (epidural or spinal block) for surgery
$315/day for post op pain management
My Hospital room is $1100/day which includes meals. C/s requires a 3 day stay
IV is like $250/day
Pharmaceuticals can range from $5/day to $500/day it depends on what you need.
Circumsion I'm not sure about (we're having a girl). But that's a pedi charge

Three things
1. Those numbers would be different if I didn't have insurance. This is what they bill my insurance company
2. Your baby will be charged a separate deductible if you have one. So my bill will include another $500 for the baby. But if she needs anything she'll have her own bill with meds, IVs, etc. a friend of mine had preemies and she's had bills just for her babies that ranged from $10,000 to $20,000 depending on how long they had to stay in the hospital.
3. Your pediatrician will send a separate bill for their services including circumsion, visits and vaccines

Having a baby is not cheap! Right now I'm set for an uncomplicated vaginal delivery so my costs are slightly lower and I have the option of an epi. But those are the numbers off the top of my head.

I paid nothing at all for both my sons, I was covered 100%, but I didn't have a c-section.

I had twins and both were breech. My section, care for the babies and hospital stay was roughly $46,000.

Where I work its about $10,000 for an uncomplicated vaginal delivery and about $15,000 for an uncomplicated c-section. Additional antibiotics, stay longer than 2-3 days, general anesthsia will run you more. This price is without insurance, of course; don't forget that insurance companies have a maxiumum allowable charge for procedures etc so what you're actually charged can be less than that. You do have insurance right? Or qualify for medicaid? If not, most hospitals will set you up with a payment plan (although who wants to owe that much?!?)

I'm in shock at how much c-sections cost! However, I guess it makes sense as it is major surgery and the dr's performing it are specialists.

I was lucky that I had my c-section in Canada and it was covered by the government (as all healthcare is in Canada).

Oh my goodness! This makes me really happy to live in Canada to have my c-section. The only thing I have to worry about is paying for a semi or private room (180-220 per night) since only a ward room is covered and I would rather not have to share a room with 3 other people after surgery (one person, I can deal with but 3 people and one bathroom seems a bit much!).

I guess it isn't so bad in the USA if you have a good insurance plan but I don't know how you would do it with no insurance.

I had a c-section almost 4 yrs ago and didnt pay nothing cause the insurance I have paid it.

^^wss - Everything pretty much the same, Pedi circ charge was $300 but was covered by my insurance. I am responsible for about $4,600 total in deductibles.

I had insurance, but it covered only part of it. I received the bills of what was paid and what wasn't. My c-section cost a total ( with stay and blue lights for DD) $23,000.

Wow that is insane! Thank god I live in Canada!

id never have a baby if i lived in the states, paying thoses prices is outragous, even if the people came to Canada and paid out of their pocket, our health is still cheaper.

Mine almost four years ago cost around $30,000 including dr bills. Some hospitals here have a cash pricing option. My friend had one at the same hospital three months ago using the cash pricing, and she only had to pay $3500.00. That didn't include labs and the dr fee, but it did lower her cost significantly. One thing I did learn was that if you wait until you have enough money to have a baby, you'll never have one. So, if you are somewhat financially stable, go ahead and go for it. :) Also, they can't charge interest on hospital bills and usually will let you make payments. If you don't have insurance and end up having to pay for the whole thing, you could always pay $20 per month until it's paid off (pretty much forever). Good luck!

I have medicaid so it paid for my c-section and all

I'm from Washington (state) and my c-section came to about $13,000.00 after everything. I went in wanting a natural birth but because of complications tried several hours of pitocin, a few doses of stadol (to sleep), then an epidural, and finally the C-section (+ 3 days at the hospital.) Luckily insurance covered everything :)
