My little girl is nearly a year old. When should I think about taking the sides off the cotbed??

With my lb he never settled from 7months, so finally at 9months we took the sides of and he slept a little better with a spare mattress under his cotbed incase he fell out he was in a single junior bed by 14 months old.

My LG sleeps well in her cot she goes down awake, so don't think it will be soon. Just wondered for the future.

Also when do you start using the tog quilts she still just uses baby blankets and a bobble blanket made when she was just tiny. It's not cold I'm just thinking of nearer Christmas should I start using a cotbed quilt.

My youngest will be 2 next month and still in her cot.

The way I see it, is if they are happy and sleeping, there is no reason to change! It also means they are contained when they wake.
I wouldnt even think about it for at least another year if she is perfectly fine where she is x

My dd will be 3 in December and she is still in her crib. She asks to go in it at night so I won't worry about taking the sides off until she wants them off or starts trying to get out on her own.

We moved to a bed at 18 months as he kept banging himself on the sides of the cot. We stuck with it once we'd done it as we felt we'd taken that step and didn't want to go backwards but tbh it probably was a bit early. He'd just started settling and sleeping well and we had a good 6 months of him getting out of bed constantly and not settling and his sleeping got worse. We also introduced the new bedding when he switched to a bed. He was fine with this but does kick it off most nights

DS1 was 2 when we took the sides off and he was a nightmare but was climbing out so they had to come off!

DS2 will have the sides up for as long as possible, he's 14mnts and there is no way I'd consider taking the sides off anytime soon!

We moved to using the toddler bed as soon as she could walk confidently. We bedshared otherwise, but in the evening she would go in her cot and it was just such a faff. But I wanted her to be able to walk and climb in and out of it easily before we moved her. She started to walk confidently at 16 months, and we moved her around 17 months. She never tried to climb out. I just hated the thing and was tired of bending over it to get her. It was much easier when she could get herself in and out and I could lie down next to her if needed. We started to use a pillow and duvet at the same time. I felt comfortable once I knew she was in a space that didn't have sides, otherwise the duvet would have just bunched up on top of her in the cot.

My son just transitioned to a twin/single from his crib, and he was 3 in July. He's had a twin in his room for a few months now and would choose which he slept in each nap and night, but it was 85% crib. Then one night he said he was done with his crib and his baby brother could have it.

I'd leave it as late as possible, we have just put DS in a toddler bed at 15 months but only because he was climbing out of his cotbed anyway since 14 months and we decided it was safer to just have him in a bed. Once you take the sides off and they could get out when they feel like it etc we found it a bit of a pain having to secure all his furniture to the wall so he couldn't pull it on himself, moving everything he shouldn't have up high or taking It out etc. And making sure there was nothing he could climb on.

Thanks everyone. Starting to think we should leave it for a while before considering taking sides off. I might move the cot with sides still on in her brothers room once she starts sleeping better through the night....... When....lol

Think il stick to her blankets for now, like pp said I dont like idea of her being confined in a cot and getting tangled in a cot quilt. She's very wriggly during the night. I might use sleep bags during the winter. As now she just wiggles out of her blankets.

Thanks again..... Any idea when she might start sleeping through....... My son Co slept so doesn't sleep through still most nights. He has to come get one of us to get bk to sleep. But usually drifts off quickly again

My DS1 went into a bed at 19 months old as he figured out how to climb out of the cot. The cot could be converted into a cot bed but we just went straight to a king single bed as I don't really see the point in going to a cot bed and then a single bed a short time afterward, it's like an extra step you don't need.

Like everyone else is saying, if your LO is happily sleeping in the cot with sides on and not trying to climb out then you can really leave them as long as they are still happy in it.
