Could I have your opinions please :)

I agree with all the ladies above. More realistic information antenatally. I did go to the class that was offered via NHS and it was very helpful as it was followed up by local breastfeeding group so we had chance to ask them some questions. I was told that BF should not hurt when baby latches properly. But after 12 days, bleeding nipples and baby constantly feeding It just didn't feel right . Also there was so much conflicting information from MW some said that its normal some said that baby shouldn't feed more than our. I did go to the support group and got encouragement and had another successful BF day but then it all went out the window and emotional rollercoaster started again. I cried constantly for 2 weeks and felt like a failure and to this day I feel that this has been biggest let down in my life. I went on to express and gave EBM for 5 weeks. I must say that there was plenty of help in hospital and there are lots of support out there. Just Carmen is my first baby (very lazy eater and sleepy baby) and I was all alone and too proud to keep asking help and my main concern was to feed my baby I guess that's why we never got on with BF. If there will be next baby I would definitely try again.

I can't thank you all enough.
You're stories make for a difficult read, as I keep finding myself in tears :'(
I can't believe how unsupported mums are.
I really can't express what a difference you are making, as it's spurring us on and on.

We've had a fantastic result though (yippee!!)
it's been agreed that b.a.b.i.e.s are going to be given the Unicef training that will enable us to work as peer support trainers.
We will be working in the local community and hopefully the wards to help support mums just like you.

I really, really hope this works. We have so much work to do, but potentially this could be amazing.

Please keep everything crossed, and thanks again ladies xxxx

I really made a valiant effort to try and breastfeed...but it didn't work out for us. My baby was sent straight to the NICU after birth for some fluid in her lungs, therefore I wasn't able to have her latch on right away...then while she was in the NICU her sugar bottomed out (thanks to my wonderful gestational diabetes) so they had to give her some formula to raise it, which I didn't mind, if my baby needs it she needs it. Then about 16 hours or so after birth they brought her downstairs to me (I spent loads of time in the NICU but where she was in an incubator I couldn't have her latch on there so I expressed my colostrum instead and they mixed that with the formula she was eating), and she latched on just fine. So I continued at that point, only my breast since her sugar stabalized. But she was only getting colostrum, so jaundice began to develop. We got discharged from the hospital and that first night was utter chaos..where I pumped to get my milk to come in faster while she was in NICU, it came in and was sooo engorged that when she tried to latch on, my milk wouldn't let down, but with her sucking so hard my engorgement got worse to the point I developed mastitis...then her jaundice got worse, so she had to go back to the hospital and be under the bili lights for a night and just through it all, I almost felt like despite my best intentions to give her my breast milk I was making her worse, so we bit the bullet and started formula..well then the day before yesterday she was practically chewing through my t shirt to get to my boob so I gave it to her, she nursed for about 10 minutes total then just wanted to chew on my nipples...and NOW SHE HAS THRUSH! lol So I just give...we are going to be a loud and proud formula fed family! lol

That's wonderful news! You're doing a great thing here and I hope lots of mums and babies benefit from the fantastic work.

Thank you
