Could we be transitioning to 2 naps already?

My DD is 5 1/2 months old. She has good sleep habits in that she settles herself to sleep and I always put her down wide awake in her crib and she goes to sleep on her own. But she is up every 2-3 hrs all night long. We have had battles for weeks now with her waking 45 min after going to sleep and it being very difficult to get her back down. She is either wide awake and ready to party, or she is tired but just can't get herself back to sleep no matter what we try. Three times in the last two weeks we accidentally didn't have a third nap, either we were out at a bbq and she wouldn't settle or something happened to prevent her from having a third nap. So she was up for about 3-4 hrs between her last nap and bedtime. These three days were the best night sleeps she has ever had, only waking once at 3 am to nurse. The last few days her third nap has become a struggle so today I just didn't push the issue and she went to bed easily and didn't wake after 45 min. Is 5 1/2 months too long to transition to 2 naps?

I'm not sure what the average is but DS was 5 months. His naps were a good two hours mid morning and mid afternoon though.

I wish my 5 1/2 month old has 3 good naps I usually get 30 mins to hour in morning and maybe 2 20 mins Cat naps. He wakes 2-3 times to feed at night but he does like to sleep in usually to about 8 830

My girl started to drop her third nap at around 5 1/2 months. It was on and off for a little while, and she still needed it on days when her other naps were short, but by 6 1/2 months it was pretty much gone.

She's showing every sign of wanting to drop to one nap now at 9 months, but I just don't think she's ready for it as she has been horribly grumpy on the days when she hadn't had the second sleep. When she dropped from 3 to 2, she was fine in the evenings and it was pretty clear that she didn't really need the extra sleep anymore.

My older two just never slept lol! Went to one nap a day, 1 hour long, at 4 months old. Were always up around 4am and did not sleep thru the night either.

My youngest is 6 months today and the past month he seems to be making a transition. He used to have 3-4 20-40 min long naps per day. Occasionally one of the naps would me more like 1-1.5hr. This past month he will have a handful of days running where he has 2-3 mini cat naps of 10-20 mins then one or two days one mini nap and one 1-1.5hr long nap. Like those days of having a few mini naps suddenly catches up on him and he has a big sleep to make up for it.

So it seems like it's not that unusually for the transition to happen this early. I guess I will follow her lead and if she has two good naps and isn't ready for a third then we will just skip it. She just went through a growth spurt and was sleeping 5 or more times a day for almost a week, and then bam suddenly she needs way less sleep. I just wasn't prepared for it!

I forget when DS1 dropped his 3rd nap, but DS2 dropped it right around 5 months. He is now 10 months old and still takes 2 naps a day (about 45 minutes in the morning, and then about 1 and a half hours in the afternoon). He then sleeps through 8pm-6/630 am (although didn't start sleeping through until around 8 and a half or 9 months old. At 5 1/2 months he was still up 3 times a night and was down to once per night around 7 months)

I envy most of you. My lo never really napped. She would nod off for a few minutes here and there, as soon I put her down she would wake up. But if we were in the car she would pass right out and then not nap at home. I have never been able to put her down and gotten a full hour nap out of her and she is 9 months.
