Hi everyone

My lil girl Is 6 weeks and is FF, first she was on cow and gate 1 but was very gassy and suffering from colic and constipation do HV advised me to change her to the comfort milk by cow and gate.

Also to add before we made this change we tried everything infacol, dentinox, and colief and none worked :(.

The comfort didn't work either infavt some days made the problem worse!

So she told me to go to the GP which I did who put lo on gaviscon and gave her lactilose for constipation he did not tell me to take her of comfort milk despite me asking if I should. Any way we tried this and its been working realy well ...

But then a new hv came last week and told ,me to take her off the comfort milk and change her milk to somthing else as apparently she shouldn't be on gaviscon and the comfort milk together. So we changed her to aptimel with the gaviscon and the problem was muh worse than ever before!

Lo is constantly farting all day bless her and screams in pain with bher tummy she's now got diarrhoea and going 4times in 1 hour yesterday! She's also being very sick on aptimal. So today webbrought another tin of cow and gate comfort as she was brilliant on that with the gaviscon

Is it really bad for me to kep her on comfort milk with gaviscon she was perfectly fine before the big change in milk, we really don't know what to do for the best any advice would be great!

The only plus to aptimal is that she's actually opening her bowels now other than that its 10x worse

Thank you in advance

Xxxx

I'd check back with your GP :flower: Is there something added to the comfort milk that could interact with the Gaviscon maybe? I hope your LO's tummy troubles pass soon :hugs:

I have no idea about Comfort and Gaviscon I'm afraid, but Aptamil made my daughter very uncomfortably windy. She was always a windy and sicky baby anyway, and we tried nearly every formula going, but Aptamil was the only one that made her scream with pain. Possibly there is some ingredient that exacerbates wind trouble?

Thank you :)

The hv is coming tomorrow morning, yet another different one lol who'll probably tell me somthing completely different from the previous 2 ! Also have an appointment tomorrow with gp so going to ask again, when I asked him the first time he said that she should be fine being on both but hv really was against it and told me she can't be on both as she said that the gaviscon thikens the formula already and that the comfort is a thick milk aswell so both would be to thick, she told me to finish the tin and change it.... But she was perfectly fine on both before I told her :(

Its horribble isn't it when their obviously upset and uncomfortable and there's not much you can do to help them, I feel like she hates me for it have pnd and its making my anxieties about motherhood worse as I feel I should he able to help her and mak it al better but I can't :(

Her bowel movments are deffinatly more regular I'm wondering if itnould be just earlybdays on this new milk (about 3 days in now) perhaps I'm not giving it a chance to work :/.... Lo ran out of gaviscon yesterday and her repeat perscription wasn't ready so she hasn't had any for 2 days this is probably a factor I suppose.... Should I give it another week with gaviscon added and maybe see a change or keep her on comfort

I know you're not supposed to use gaviscon together with thickened milk (as gaviscon creates a gel in the stomach to stop food rising, and thickened milk is not exactly the same process but similar and so you're more or less doubling up the effect).

I remember someone on here saying their doctor had said they could use a particular comfort milk because it wasn't thickened. Hungry baby milk is thickened but comfort milk isn't necessarily is what she was saying. I don't know if her doctor was right, but a consideration. I'd ask the pharmacist to get their opinion on it and go back to the doctor.

She may need something other than gaviscon, Isobel has gaviscon, omeprazole and domperidone for her reflux. It took a while to get diagnosis and find the right drugs but once we did she got much better, also we found that her bowels got back to being regular by themselves but they have always been firmer since. We did go through a stage of using lactolose but only for a couple of weeks.

Hope that helps.

My LO was on aptamil comfort which is the same as cow and gate he used to have gaviscon too. I called the aptamil helpline and asked if it was ok they said it was fine as the milk doesn't actually have a thickening agent. He was fine with it but needed a bigger teat. Cow and gate have a help line too you could call.

My LO is on gaviscon and has aptimal comfort milk which is the same as cow and gate. She's been on this for about 7 weeks now and both the hv and dr said it was fine! It's really helped her wind problem and after the first 2 weeks the constipation went away. We did have to swap to size 3 teats though as it is very thick! I would stick with what's helping your LO.

my lo found c&g comfort and gaviscon together too think and he fussed through bottles as he had to suck hard... i changed him to the pre made cartons of c&g and he was a much happier baby. he was on cartons for 6 weeks before i was able to wean him back to powder and before this he had meds changed to domperidone and ranitidine but is now happy and settled.
