Baby B's back cracks when I lift him from his swing.
He arches so dramatically when he realizes I'm coming to take him out, he makes himself into a C going backwards, and when I pick him up his little back cracks several times.
I've tried waiting for him to un-arch before lifting him but he's so impatient to be picked up that he DOESN'T un-arch!
He'll just stay that way and holler.
I've tried a few different techniques, trying to get him out of there without it happening, but it always ends the same.
He has his 9-month doctor check next week anyway, but I thought I'd ask here in case it needs to be moved up…
Do you think this is hurting his spine?
It doesn't bother him at all when it happens, it's as if he doesn't even notice.
But does it have some affect on him?
I know somebody who grew up with horrible back problems because his father used to put him in a beanbag chair and throw him - it made him laugh as a kid but caused irreparable damage.
So I'm worried.
He won't take his afternoon nap anyplace but in his swing, but if it's going to injure him…..

My daughter did the same and my pediatrician said some babies are pop-y like that and he doesn't worry too much unless it obviously causes them pain or if it's the hips that are popping

It's totally normal. It's a myth that joints popping is a bad thing. As long as they aren't dislocating (you'd know!), it's just a release of air from the joint as it moves. So people are just more clicky and poppy than others. My daughter is the same. Her back, shoulder, wrists, etc. all pop and always have. I do have hypermobile joints myself (meaning they are more flexible, like I can bend in ways normal people probably shouldn't, and tend to pop a lot), so I imagine she probably is too, which might explain some of it. But really, it's totally normal that joints pop during a usual range of motion. It can only cause damage when people force joints to move unnaturally in ways that can wear or dislocate the joint (like your friend with his dad - though probably that's not really the real reason he has back problems, it's much more likely to be an injury that occurred later in life).

I think it's normal! My son's back cracks when i lift him up and I've heard it's nothing to worry about :)
