For the past few months ruby has only been able to go asleep when rocked (for at least 20mins) or in a car or when being walked in her pram. I am exhausted by this and my back feels like it's going to break! I have spent hours on sites researching ways to stop this and teach her to self settle.... which is doubly hard as she won't take a dummy.
So i put her down for her nap at 12.00 after her bottle and she went beserk screaming her head off i sat in the room and shushed her but this did no good so i sat outside of her room and let her cry then kept going in to reassure her patting shushing and even tried a dummy she just would not settle. I kept this up for almost 2 hours and she finally went asleep :happydance: Albeit for 30mins (she never naps for long)

It broke my heart listening to her cry but i knew she was okay as everytime i went in and patted her she started smiling her head off at me
Hopefully she will not cry for as long the next time! Just had to share as this is the first time she has gone asleep unaided since she was about 6wks old!:happydance: xx

Have you swaddled as well? I find that my baby will never stay asleep unless he is swaddled. Good luck, hope things get better for you!

My LO was just like this and we found a swing really useful. It weaned him off being rocked by us and gradually we got him used to sleeping in it without it swinging and from there moved him into the cot. He now settles himself off fine for naps and night time. It took us about 3-4 weeks but I would recommend it to anyone - I personally couldn't stand the crying the couple of times I tried to leave him to cry himself to sleep!

No hun she's never liked being swaddled, she just goes mad and tries to kick her arms and legs about! She literally has a fit if i try to do it lol x

Aw that's too bad! Mine has a fit for about 5-10 minutes and then relaxes

Why the rush to self settle? Your baby obviously still needs you to help her to get to sleep. My lo is only a couple of weeks younger then yours and im happy to help her to go to sleep for as long as she needs me to. This is not a dig in any way,im just curious to know x

Well done. The first time is ALWAYS the worst. the next time will be slightly better and then it just improves every time.
As you said, you know she was fine when you went in , just having a tantrum about not being in your arms.
Tobi went down after a 5 minute shout this afternoon!

YOu should be very proud of you and Ruby,

Thankyou hun, it was you posting yesterday about how you got Tobi asleep without rocking that gave me the kick up the bum to do it lol xx Well done Tobi for going to sleep that quick! xx

I am so happy with how Tobi is doing. It will make such a difference. Keep it up sweetie.

Can I ask why you don't stay in the room if she cries as much either way?

Sorry, no advice just wanted to say how much I love the pic of your LO in her Everton shirt in your sig! I'm not allowed to inflict club allegiance on my LO (doesn't stop me when Daddy's at work though!)

Because i thought she was getting worse everytime she looked over at me she was giving me a look as if ''you're there so why don't you just pick me up'' and it was too hard looking at her when she was crying so i just got a stool and sat outside her room instead and kept poking my head in every few mins so she couldn't see me x

Two other things chick, which I have found invaluable.
Make NO eye contact or say any words, it only encourages them. Shush is ok.
also I found that if I put Tobi on his side then he settles better. It is the same position that he would fall asleep in if he was in my arms! (just prop him up with a blanket until asleep and then take it away)
Maybe look at that for Ruby.

Haha thanks here's one of her in her first ever proper kit (my OH wasn't pleased as he supports liverpool) lol xx

I'm doin the no eye contact thing but haven't tried laying her on her side so will try that tonight when i put her down for the night, that's a good idea with the blanket, thanks hun xx

I thought the minimum age to cry it out was about 4 months but 6 months was more ideal?

I think if you read up on it you'll find Ruby is too young for CIO.

I'm not strictly letting her 'cry it out' as i titled this thread, i'm just not rocking her to sleep anymore! And by doing that it means she cries so i have been in and out the room like a yoyo shushing her and patting her and holding her hand etc i would never just leave her to it.

I have read up on it thankyou and that's why i'd never dream of letting her cry it out properly... i am literally doing everything i used to do when i rocked her like shushing and patting except she's now lying in her cot when i'm doing this and she doesn't like it! But she has to get used to the fact that i can't rock her for every nap she has and every night for bed, it's exhausting annd the longer i do it the more used to it she will get.

I agree, its more along the lines of sssh/Pat that CIO.
