hi ladies

i got my BFP a few days ago and my last period was the 27/07. i have a chromosome disorder and have been to see the genetics nurse today and have been advised i have an early scan at around 8 weeks with a view to a CVS at 11 weeks. I'm a little worried about this as i have been told it increased miscarriage by about 2% (although they said 1% through the test and another due to it being so early in the pregnancy). i'm now torn as i would obviously like to listen to medical advise but am worried about miscarriage. has anyone got any advise or experience with this test? thanks x

I had a CVS done my last pregnancy...unfortunately it wasnt for the same reason. My baby had passed so they wanted to test her chromosomes (we found out after cvs it was a girl)...I really didnt find it was that bad...they were really good and it didnt hurt at all. I have also heard it can cause miscarriage but then again if your baby has a chromosome disorder you can miscarry as well so it's a hard situation. If I were in that situation I would risk the CVS only because you know you have a CD so there is a good chance it could be passed onto baby. Only you know what is right for you! Good luck hun xx

I've had the CVS procedure done twice. Once transabdominal and one transvaginal. Both can be uncomfortable(cramping/pinching feelings) but it's not bad. The hardest part is needing a full bladder for the transvaginal procedure and having a doctor poke and prod around in your vagina/uterus. Not fun.

There is a risk of miscarriage as with the amnio. However, you have to trust your doctor. The one who did both procedures is one of the pioneers of the procedure and has been doing it for 25 years. He's good and he doesn't take chances. If he can't gain access easily, he stops. That is what happened this last time. So for this pregnancy I've had both a CVS and an amnio and baby is fine. I'm 23 weeks today.

I also have a rare genetic deletion hence the need for the additional testing. We had no idea until after son was born. We knew early on that something was medically wrong. DH and I made the decision after our son passed that we would do the additional and somewhat risky testing for our peace of mind. It's personal choice.
