I know caffeinated coffee isn't good when TTC (or when pg)...so I switched to decaf as of yesterday (before that I was drinking green tea every morning, which I know is supposed to help with EWCM), but I've been wanting the feeling of drinking cofee w/ cream at work... is decaf coffee okay?

am not an expert (also trying to quit coffee but failing miserably) but I understand it depends what process is used for decaffeination; if water is used it should be ok but if they used chemicals it might be more damaging than ordinary coffee. I never considered switching to decaf cos it is difficult to figure that out.

Hmmm...okay. It's Folgers, so maybe I can google it. ;-) TY! I heard the same thing about green tea -- that decaf tea was worse because of the chemicals. :-\

ugh i've been drinking starbucks decaf espresso roast and it's apparently decaffeinated with chemicals...i would have thought starbucks would use the water process :(

:( Crap. I got decaf frapaccino yesterday thinking it would be better for me... So does this mean all coffee drinks are out? Folgers doesn't have their decaf into online anywhere (that I can find -- anyone else?), so I hit "contact us" and am awaiting a response of some sort... :-\

Most decafs out there use the chemical process. Typically if they don't it is more expensive and advertised as "naturally decafinated"

GOOD NEWS!!! (I think...?) What do you guys think?

Dear Ms. J...,

Thank you for contacting The J.M. Smucker Company regarding Folgers® Classic Decaf Coffee. We always enjoy hearing from consumers and are pleased to know you enjoy our products.

Regarding your inquiry, we use two decaffeination methods for our coffee: “sparkling water” process and ethyl acetate direct process. The “sparkling water” process is a natural process that uses carbon dioxide derived from air and purified water. The ethyl acetate process uses ethyl acetate and steam. Ethyl acetate is found naturally in foods such as apples, bananas, and pineapples. The ethyl acetate we use is structurally the same as what is in fruit but is not derived from natural sources. Even though a trace amount of ethyl acetate may remain in the coffee beans after the decaffeination process is complete, over 500 cups of decaffeinated coffee would need to be consumed to equate to the amount of ethyl acetate that is present in a very ripe banana.

We have designed our blends to work well with both decaffeination methods and can use either method for our coffees.

Again, we appreciate your interest in Folgers® products. If you should have further questions or need additional information, please visit us at www.folgers.com or contact us at 800-937-9745, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Sincerely,

Carla
Consumer Relations Representative
