Hey, I had two fillings at the dentist yesterday and she advised me not to have a local anaesthetic injection as it is bad for the baby, so I went ahead and it wasn't the most pleasant sensation without!

I need to have a root canal fixed next, and don't want to go through it without numbing, so I checked on the breastfeeding network and it says local anaesthetic is ok and poses no risk to the baby!

Has anyone had a local with no reactions to lo?

Ive not heard either way but im going to the dentist to make an appointment today so will see what mine says.

I had a filling done today and my dentist (who knows I'm breastfeeding) didn't have any problems about me having the local anesthesic for my filling.
He however, will not repair cavities on pregnant women due to there being insufficient research on whether it is safe or not.

I'm sorry you had yours repaired with no numbing medicine! Ouch!!

Oh goodness! silly me I had a filling done recently, and not until i was in the dentists chair did i know i would be injected with local anaesthetic! (teach me not to research).

But, it didnt even cross my mind to ask! Anyway, there seemed to be no apparent effect on my boy, thank goodness.

I had local injected into my boob when I had my abscess drained and they said there was no risk of it affecting bubs. They even said I could feed off that side. That was at a specialist breast unit.

Ooh great to hear I don't have to go through work with no needle again! I will have to show my dentist the breastfeeding network info fact sheets so that she isn't mis-informing more people.

Thanks for your responses :)

Hey  I am a qualified dental nurse so may be able to help.

Personally I wouldn't worry about having a local anesthetic whilst BF, it's called a local because it really doesn't reach that far. For example if it's one of your top teeth and you had a local injected above one tooth the likelihood is the tooth next door to it would be unaffected by the anesthetic and would still hurt if it was worked on! The bottom is slightly different as the nerves lie differently but again doesn't really go further than one side of the mouth. What I'm trying to say is it's highly unlikely the anesthetic would get into to your milk.

HTH x
