Oh hun I am so very sorry to hear this :hugs:

Was this his first SA? Are the doctors investigating to see if there is any underlying issues cause these results?

My DH's first SA was horrid with normal volume but poor motility, poor morphology and his count was: L 2 X 10^6/ml. And live sperm was about 18-20%.

I lost hope for a bit as he has diabetes and we were told there is no way his SA would improve :(

But he has been on supplements for over 4 months now and had another SA after 3 months on them and his results came back hugely improved so sometimes it is possible to improve on those results.

This thread may offer you some answers or hope: https://www.babyandbump.com/trying-conceive-over-35/603021-semen-analysis-results.html

Thankyou so much Macwooly! That makes me feel a whole lot better. DH has to have blood tests, an ultrasound and another SA, then we will talk about supplements for him.

Need lots and lots of baby dust!!

The other thing to do is think back 3 months - was your DH on painkillers; do a lot of cycling; smoking; drinking; anything like that as this could have affected the SA as well.

When we think back DH's first SA was about 2-3 months after he had been taking some serious painkillers due to an accident which may have affected some or all of his results.

But a friend who's DH has had a number of SAs was told by her doctor that your can't really trust just one SA as so many factors can affect it including mishandling in the lab which does the analysis so 2-3 plus SAs gives a much more accurate idea of exactly what is happening.

Whilst your DH's SA is less than desirable it is advised to only BD every other day to all the concentration of sperm to increase.

The way I kept hope during the dark days was to remember it only takes on :spermy: to perform the miracle.

Sending loads and loads and loads of :dust::dust::dust::dust:

OK, so DH needs another SA - how soon should he have it? Should we wait a month or so, or do it next week?

If the doctor has asked for it I would say next week as there could be a query over the handling of the sample.

If he just wants to run another for comparison then really whenever you think.

I personally would wait a month but I know for some that is too long.

Also it seems 2 days abstinence and taking the sample on the third day gives the most accurate results as morphology drops off the longer the abstinence for what I have researched.

Good luck with it :hugs::dust:

Thanks again girls! We might go next weekend then, cos our GP specifically asked.

My RE advised hubby to start taking the following vitamins after his first SA, and I have to say that it HELPED tremendously:

Multi-Vitamin
L-Carnitine & L-Arginine
B12

Good Luck!

DH's second SA results came back - and are better than the first! He now has 3mil/ml, with 5% motility (yay!), 24% live and 8% morphology... so we are still in with a chance!! Rapt, considering the first result came back 17% live, 5% morph and 0% MOTILITY! Singing the praises of zinc!

wow! that's fabulous! congrats!
was it just straight zinc that helped? we had a not so favorable sa as well...17% motility with very poor liquifaction. the re suggested trying proxeed, so he just started taking that and we're going to try another sa in 3 months. i'm just desperate to find a solution to this (which i'm sure you understand!)

DH has been taking liquid zinc (quarter teaspoon in a glass of water once a day) and Bio-C vitamin. Give it a try, so worth it!

What lead you to do that vs. L-Carthinine, L-arginine, Vitamin Bs?
:happydance: for the improvements!

So pleased for the improvement for you in those results

We went to our GP and naturopathist - they both suggested zinc and Vit C, so we went with those. He has low testosterone, so we are seeing a specialist for that soon, and I might start him on selenium. Hopefully though we will get our BFP soon and none of this will be an issue....
