Hi Ladies,

Just posted on the gestational complications forum, but thought I would post here too.

I was diagnosed with GD last Wednesday. My GTT results were pretty high: 6.8 after fasting and the 12.6 after the 2hr challenge. I saw the diabetes nurse on Thurs, she was lovely and explained everything to me. She said my fasting result was just within the range of having GD, if it would have been over 7 it could have been quite possible that I had pre-existing type 2 diabetes (Thinking back though, the night before I had my GTT I did eat a big bowl of pasta, shop bought tomato sauce and meatballs at about 9pm because we were running late after my DS1 footie training - might explain the high fasting reading??)

I have been monitoring my blood sugar six times a day all of this week to see if I can manage my GD with diet and exercise. But I am finding it all so stressful - everytime I have a reading outside of my targets (under 6 for before meals and under 7.8 an hour after meals) I feel like I have failed and am hurting my baby  In fact, I can't stop crying everytime this happens.......

I seem to have ok but not great fasting results (bloods taken first thing in the morning with are between 5.6 - 6.4) and good results just before meals (anything from 4.4 - 5.8). But I can't seem to tolerate any of the 'good carbohydrate foods' I am meant to eat with every meal. A bowl of plain porridge made with SS milk sends my blood sugar between 12.6 - 13.6. I don't dare try any other cereals :nope: I can't eat jacket potatoes, seeded wholemeal bread, or even the kidney beans I put in my homemade chilli last night. The only time I get a reading under 7.8 is if I eat just eggs (i.e an omlette) or a protein (i.e tuna or chicken) with veggies. Earlier in the week I made a veggie soup which I ate with half a wholemeal pitta bread and it sent my sugars soaring to 10.8. My readings just seem so random???

Trying to look at the positives though, I can seem to manage a couple of oatcakes or a banana and or a muller light yogurt as a snack inbetween meals if I am hungry. I have really been trying to increase my exercise too, walking after lunch and dinner for about 20 mins and any other walking I can fit in on top of that too.

I am seeing my consultant and dietician tomorrow and so will know then if they want me to try medication. I also have a scan on Thurs so they can check on my little one - and measure her little tummy to make sure she is not getting too big  I hope she is ok in there.

I just can't believe how down I feel about it all, I know my hormones are partly to blame but I can't stop crying whenever I think about it - this really is not like me at all. I am normally such a positive person, even when faced with difficult times. Anyone else with GD feel like this? My poor hubby and boys, they don't know what to do to make feel better.....

Sorry for the ramble, I just think I needed to get it all of my chest. I would welcome any one else's experiences - do you think they will put me on insulin tomorrow?

I'm sorry you're feeling down :( I have no experience I'm afraid to be able to help at all but just wanted to respond.

I know it's upsetting but try not to worry, think of how good it is that they are monitoring this and working with you to find a way through it. The main thing is that you are trying to sort it out and they are giving you lots of support with the consultants etc

Hope someone has some experiences to share that will help you - let us know how you get on :hugs:

I really do know how you feel. I felt exactly the same when I was diagnosed two weeks ago, and some since then too.

My results were pretty much the same as yours, even after eating "good" things but then I spoke to the dietician and tried to change a few things with diet, exercise etc.

I find drinking lots of water helps, as well as doing 10 mins exercise after each meal (before the 1 hour is up to test)

Mornings were my worst (apparently common) so I've been put on tablets to control morning only. The rest of the time I'm managing to control it, just!

There has been a lot of help in the Gestational Complications section on a thread I started....but everything is all trial and error!

Try not to let it get you down so much...I know it's easier said than done but it's been caught now and you're trying to do something about it. Hopefully your appointment will yield positive advice and help :hugs:

If you want to chat about it, PM me :flower:
