Diaper Genie, is it necesary?

I had one with dd1 and found it unuseful, I am super picky about smell, and just opening the top to push the diaper down killed me, and I hated dumping it, even with the odor block all I could smell was tons of dirty diapers. I use my plastic shopping bags and wrap them up and I have a trash in the garage (my 5 year old takes it for me) I gave the diaper genie away after like 5 months...
