Hi ladies,
Just wondering if any of you had a wound drain after your section?
Did they give you a reason for it?
I had one after my last section, and the removal was by far the worst thing that I ever felt! It's the one thing I'm absolutely dreading this time around! But I've recently read that there is no reason to use them as they don't have a benefit

Nope and I've never heard of anyone (apart from you) having one.

Nope and I have my 5th section on weds xx

No, I didn't have one. I have heard of it being put in after if there is an infection but not as a standard procedure. Have you asked them why you ended up with one?

I had one this time around... Have to say it scared me but was pretty painless!

The hospital I go to has a pretty poor ob/gyn reputation :nope: and unfortunately nothing was written into my theatre notes last time. I was open for 1hr20 mins after baby was delivered, haemorrhaged and my blood pressure bottomed-out. Also my urinary catheter bag was filling with pure blood for about 12hrs after surgery. Yet the doctors told me nothing (apart from the fact that I'd haemorrhaged). One nurse suggested to me that they "probably nicked your bladder. It happens quite often" but I was given no more information.
About 6months after baby was born I asked my Gp if he could find out if something had gone wrong as I was getting some problems that suggested adhesions and the response he got from a junior doctor (who was not around at the time of my section) was that she had read through my notes and there was no mention of anything happening in theatre!
So clearly something went wrong and somebody didnt want it in writing, so they didnt bother! And I presume a wound drain was put in to collect from whatever was still bleeding/had the potential to carry on bleeding
It's annoyed me tbh, as at least if it had been documented in my notes the new team this time could be careful when they go in x

Oh dear, that sucks. Horrible when they cannot be bothered to communicate! :hugs: Wishing you a very smooth c-section this time around! :flower:

Nope, and I always wondered why other people had them. Mostly I've read online its people over in the Europe/UK area that seem to have it done..... don't know anyone in Canada that had it.

Thanks so much :) x

Yes i did with my 1st!

It was an emergency section and i lost lots of blood, to the point of nearly having a transfusion. The drain was put in to monitor and collect anymore blood loss.. It stung a little having it removed from what i remember x

I've had 2 c sections, and due to have my 3rd in 12 days and never had one. I've never even heard of one before.

I had one after my first but not my second. My first was an emcs where I had a major uterus tear and pph as they pulled my dd out. I had 3 hours of surgery after she was born to repair it and 4 blood transfusions. The drain stayed in for 24 hours to monitor any further blood loss. My second was an elective section and went super smoothly minimal blood loss no wound drain. Feeling much better this time. I had some gas and air when they tooky wound drain out as it was pretty painful.

Oh my gosh! That sounds horrendous! :hugs:
So glad the second time was better. And hopefully it will be the same for me, and no wound drain. But if I do end up with one, I'll definitely ask for some gas & air for removal! x

I had a placental abruption and 2 transfusions and never had a drain in

I've never heard of this either, both my csections were quite straightforward though

I had a drain due to my bladder being injured and bleeding heavy, and going by my drain I'm glad I had it as it collected wuite a lot! I also had gas and air during removal

I didn't have for either of my c sections but did have one for ovarian cyst removal. When I was taken out it was the sorest thing I have ever experience. The tube twisted like a pigs tail inside me. It was horrific. Never again.

This is exactly what it felt like for me too!! x
