Did you throw up during your gestational diabetes test?

I totally understand the fear of being sick, I was really worried about this too. I've just got back from my GTT this morning. It was the 3 hour test and it was much better this time round than when I was expecting DS.
Firstly, they gave me Lucozade (like Gatorade) and that was much better to drink than the syrupy goo. My MW said a lot of places are switching to commercially produced drinks like this as women were feeling faint and sometimes being sick with the horrible clear drink. She also said to take Lucozade with me so if they didn't have it I could say I preferred it and opt for a better taste. I don't know if this is an option for everyone as each place seems to have different rules but could be worth investigating.
They worst thing was sitting upright in a chair, feeling a bit woozy, but I tried to concentrate on reading or playing games on my phone. When it was all done, they gave me a complimentary ham sandwich :happydance: I sat and ate it like a mad woman!
Hope you won't encounter any sickness but def worth discussing with people first to see what options their might be to make it less of a worry for you. :hugs:

I am definitely bringing a snack to eat immediately after! A ham sandwich sounds delicious, I'll probably make myself a sandwich.

I don't think I can get Lucozade here in the US (not anywhere that I know of anyway). I am going to call my clinic today and ask if they would allow me to eat 28 jelly beans instead. It's still 50g of simple carbohydrates, and studies have shown it's as effective but with less side effects.

28 jelly beans also sounds pretty awful, though... I really couldn't care less for sweets.

If not, then I guess it's Glucola for me :(

Fingers crossed they'll let you do that. Oh I forgot to add that I drank lots of water after the test begun so I stayed hydrated and that really helped with the feeling of hunger and slight ickiness of that glucose hit. Good luck

Guess I'm the exception to the rule. I'm also emetophobic, felt absolutely fine after drinking the stuff (I had Lucozade and was burping like mad but that was all). And then I go and fail the test! Was diagnosed with GD and had to follow a strict diet for the rest of my pregnancy.

By the way, it shouldn't matter how much sugar you ate before a random blood sugar test, your body isn't supposed to let your blood sugar go over a certain amount so if your sugar was high it indicates a problem.

The day after I gave birth I ate a huge slice of sticky chocolate cake with icing and sweets stuck on top. One hour later my blood sugar was 6 something (about 110 in US units). Which is lower than if I ate a single slice of toast during pregnancy!

Eating does make a difference to blood sugar but it's true that a normal persons blood sugar should only get so high after eating though. My doc wanted to send me for a GTT for blood sugar of 100 mg/dL but when he found out I had eaten before hand he said I could repeat the blood test and fast 12hrs before (no one had told me to the first time :dohh:).

I also have emetophobia. :( It is horrible. I didn't even think that this test could make me sick. I have no idea how it is done here in Canada. I have my next doctor appt on Friday and will ask him a million questions about it then. I haven't had any blood tests for my blood sugar yet, but they do check my urine for sugars every time. I have a weird reaction to what my body thinks is low sugar - low sugar reactions but blood tests don't show low blood sugar - so I have no idea how my body will react to that much sugar.

I really, REALLY hope you don't get sick. I know just how you feel :hugs:

Thank you :hugs:

I am sure I won't get sick... but of course, being so unreasonably afraid makes me utterly paranoid.

I will be sure to update on how it went! I have it tomorrow in the morning (US time of course).

I feel so stupid being so afraid of getting sick. I feel for people who are afraid of needles, because that must be horrible too. But for me, I'd rather they stick me with 20 needles then throw up!!!

I'm such a baby. :baby:

I don't think you should feel stupid at all! It is just as valid a phobia as anyone else's. My DH is afraid of needles and doesn't do well with blood. He nearly vomited/passed out getting a tiny tattoo. He got some blood work done last year and was very brave throughout and thought "I made it!" but as soon as he stood up he got weak, shaky, sweaty, and dizzy. There is no way we can say our phobia is any sillier than any other. :hugs: No phobias are stupid or silly to the people suffering through them.

I have been working really hard to work through my phobia and get over it. I think I have finally figured out why I am so afraid of getting sick. I feel like I will suffocate and die when I throw up. That fear is unreasonable, I know this in my head, but still I panic. I am a teacher who teaches primary grades and I used to be in constant fear that a student would throw up. I HAVE to get over my fear. My DH and I made a deal that I would deal with blood and he would deal with sick with our child, but I really don't want to be that way. It is going to be a long road but I am going to do it.

Good luck with your test tomorrow. I hope you can do the jelly beans instead.

Thanks again...

One day I'm sure I'll get over the fear (probably due to my child being ill), but until then... we'll see what happens! ;)

As far as the jelly beans go, I just realized that the 3-hour test uses a concentration with 100g of sugar instead of the normal 50g... so I'd have to eat over 50 jelly beans in that case!! (I'm hoping I just read it wrong... that's equal to eating over 12 tablespoons of sugar on empty stomach...) Just thinking about it makes me ill so I'll just see what happens with the Glucola...

:growlmad:

Well I think I have a cold. Today I am very tired, my nose is stuffy, I've got an itchy throat, and I just don't feel well overall.

I thought it was allergies yesterday when my throat was a little itchy, but it's a lot worse today.

I don't know if I should call my doctor??

I'd rather get it over, though. Otherwise I'll just be worrying another week.

I'm a hardcore emetophobe! I was 12 when I last got sick and I swore never again and made sure of that fact. It has made me a huge clean freak. I fret over any possibility of getting sick: cancer bc of chemo, pregnancy bc of MS, kids bc they are just lil immunity suckers.

I was terrified of the possibility of spit up and tummy bugs with my son. But I'm not phased by it anymore. Of course it doesn't stop me from bleaching the crap out of the house when he is sick because the fear isn't him throwing up, it's me. DH even had food poisoning on Sunday and I avoided him like the plague and slept downstairs. (He didn't throw up, but I wasn't taking any chances.)

But the glucose test was easy. Like drinking orange pop. It was tough to suck down all that sweetness but it was more of a gut rot feeling than sick. I also had a hard boiled egg and toast before to soak up the sugar, which I think helped and a few glasses of water beforehand. Other than a heady sugar rush, I was good.

Since you are like me, I'm sure you have little tricks to keep your mind off being sick. Me, it was Angry Birds on my phone and rubbing my belly.

Too_Scared: I think the test on the Rock is the same here. It's this orange flavoured drink (not coloured) and there is only 50ml of it. You have to drink it in 5 minutes. You can pee during this time, but not food or drink or water for an hour. Then they do the bloodwork and head on home. I went home and had waffles.

I am glad I'm not the only one who is afraid of throwing up! (Not that I wish anyone to live with a fear of any kind, it's terrible!!) I also avoid people like the plague who are ill with any kind of stomach upset... even if it's it from something I can't catch, like a medication.

I am not allowed to eat 8 hours prior to the test. My doctor said to eat a good dinner, and then come in at 8:00am, and the first blood draw will be at 8:15am.

I'm sure I'll be okay!! Hopefully I'll come back on here after it tomorrow and say it was a breeze! :)

Thanks :) When did you have the test? I will be nearly 23 weeks at my next dr's appt and he hasn't mentioned it yet.

I know it can vary by provider and location, but my doctor said between 24 - 28 weeks. Some say between 26 - 28 weeks. There are some places that don't even do the one hour test, and just go straight for the three hour test. Some places don't screen for it at all!

Awesome! Thanks for the info :) I will ask the dr about it on Friday for sure.

I don't think the drink is enough t make you vomit on its own, In my last pregnancy i had horrendous morni.ng sickness though and when I had the test cos I had to fast it make me sick and faint. Really embarrassing as everyone else with fine and I had to lie down in the back of the room haha! Hopefully won't have to have one this time xx
