DO NOT USE Aptamil Anti-Reflux formula!

I used this for my DD a couple of weeks ago as she suffers quite badly from silent reflux. I was recommended it by my health visitor because it's thicker, therefore stays down.

2 days had gone by and it was like she was a new baby! This is until the third day. She started to strain, really trying to go to the toilet but it just wasn't budging. In the end she fell asleep and slept through, so we hoped to find something the next morning.

The next morning had come and it was HORRIFIC. As soon as she woke she wanted to 'go' and she just couldn't. She was screaming and crying in agony so we called the emergency doctor who advised us to take her to the hospital as there was blood.

We were there for 2 hours, she had to have a depository inserted to soften the stools and eventually she went to the toilet after constant crying. The nurse said that if we didn't bring her in, she would have tried so hard that she eventually would have torn!

I felt absolutely awful and went straight to the health visitor the next day and recommended they don't advise this formula.

She is now on Aptamil Comfort for colic and constipation which helps with her reflux too and she is a lovely content baby girl :)

Poor little thing, glad she's better now. Thanks for sharing cxx

This is really common in reflux /thickened formulas I'm afraid. We used lactulose when things got difficult but all babies are different, I don't think it's completely down to the formula

Oh how scary for you. My lo has been a bit constipated a few times and it was bad enough - cant imagine how you must have felt. Glad you've found something that works now. As pp mentioned, it really seems to vary baby to baby. Mine was bad on aptamil first whereas loads of people swear by it.

Agree with AtomicPink. A lot of reflux formulas cause constipation. Its quite hard for a lot of people to find a formula which actually helps with the reflux, especially severe reflux, so when they find one they often stick to it and manage the constipation.

So sorry about your LO :( That must have been awful. Glad shes feeling better.

Sorry your baby girl went through this :-( I would definatly give Aptamil a call and let them know what happened. Aside from maybe getting some vouchers or freebies, there might have been other incidences like this and the negative feedback might force them to look into changing and improving the formula so it doesnt happen to others. xxx

Sorry to hear that, but it really is common with thickened formula, Jason got worse on anti-reflux milk, but already had Lactulose for his medicines, it was a huge help!
Glad your new milk helps though!

Oh my gosh, that's so terrible! Poor baby. :( I'm so glad she's doing better. I remember how tough it sometimes was for my daughter to go in the first weeks. Luckily it didn't happen all too often but sometimes she'd be screaming in pain trying to go. :( Never any blood but very distressing for her and us.

Aww poor wee thing. My LO was on a thickened formula for a week and i just had to take him off it because i couldn't stand seeing him scream when trying to do a poo it is just awful. You want to help them but you just can't

Poor baby girl. Glad she is ok now & you've found the right milk for her xx

Omar was on Aptamil AR & it suited him (it's not new here), he was never constipated. But he reacted badly to Aptamil comfort

Glad she's ok hun :hugs:

It's quite normal for anti reflux meds such as Gaviscon or anti reflux formula's to cause constipation. In a lot of cases, the constipation is treated, rather than changing the treatment for reflux.
